Hi List, Thank-you all for confirming what I thought all along. I was beginning to think my brain was going fuzzy with all the data collected over the past couple of years. I had several persons come on in a personal mailing and tell me I could get all kinds of information from the 1840 census. I had always believed that only the head of household was listed by name and the rest by ages. Thanks for confirming what I thought. You all have a nice day and sure hope some of these NY brick walls come tumbling down soon. Sue [email protected]
Just received this link from another list, you can view, print or save to hard drive forms for all censuses from 1790 to 1920. http://www.familytreemaker.com/00000061.html Mary Slack Maynard Researching Slack, Gregory, Hopper, Bigelow/Bigalow, Nichols, Dunning, Mead, Fish in NY and New England, Nash, Maginn/McGinn, Donahue, Vokes in NY and Ireland, Aird and Crombie in NY and Scotland
No, unfortunately, 1840 census is not like the 1850. Heads of household in 1840, everybody in the household for 1850 and beyond. It is unfortunate for us genealogists that census takers didn't foresee the value of this information beyond their immediate need of apportioning legislative districts. Chuck Wilcox
Hi Jan, The books that I have are all for catholic births and marriages - no idea where to get non-catholic records. If yours were catholic then e-mail at [email protected] for information on how to order the books from the Northern New York American Canadian Genealogical Society. Regards, Andree
Andree, I am interested in purchasing the books you mentioned on marriage, births, etc. for Clinton, NY. I tried the website address that you gave a few days ago and was told that it didn't exist. Please give it again when you have time. Researching: George Jennings' marriage to Eliza Ann Davidson, about 1850 info on parents of Eliza; Henry Davidson and Margaret?, . Birth of my Grandfather, Charles Henry Jennings Oct.21, 1858 Also birth of his sisters, Mary @1855, and Margaret 1853 All in Saranac area of Clinton Co. NY Thank you. Jan

Hi Susan, That's the way it is in New York state. Don't remember if it is that way it for all states or not. 1850 and up family information. Before just head of household and family members just noted by figures. Would be nice if it was earlier but it isn't. Muriel Glenn
Correct. 1840 is just head of household and person counts within various age groups. The age groups are much narrower than previous census and discrimate in 5 and ten year increments as follows: <5 5-10 10-15 15-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70 70-80 80-90 90-100 >100 for each gender. > -----Original Message----- > From: Susan Jones [mailto:[email protected]] > > Is my old brain playing tricks on me or am I correct when I > say there is no real family information on the 1840 and > earlier census? Hi List, Is my old brain playing tricks on me or am I correct when I say there is no real family information on the 1840 and earlier census? It did not start until 1850 when the listing of everyone living in the household was started. If I am wrong and the 1840 census was like 1850, it would be an answer to a prayer for showing actual linkage in a family. Sue [email protected]
Andree, I am interested in the HOGAN family. Martin Hogan and his wife Ann had 2 sons in Clinton Co: Michael 1845/9 and John 1850. Martin Hogan died 1857. There were daughters born in Ireland, married probably in Clinton Co- Mary born 1835, Honora born 1840 and possibly another daughter Catherine born1839. All daus born in Ireland. Honora may have died there in Clinton Co. I do not know when his wife Ann died. I have found her in 1870 in Clinton Co census ( at least I hope it is her :) ). Thanks for checking your book, any info if helpful Kerry McHugh Olympia WA [email protected] In a message dated 3/2/00 6:32:49 PM Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: << Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2000 08:39:43 EST From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NYCLINTO-L] Marriage Lookups Hi Don, My books cover all catholic marriages and births. Hi Debbie and John, You might want to try contacting St. Joseph's Church, in West Chazy, NY. There is a Phyllis Recore, that works on the historical records for the church. She has been doing alot of research on families. Hope this helps.
