I believe my Great grandfather died in a TB Hospital or a San- for that illness. At the time of his death his wife and children were living in Dannemora NY and he did not die there but I do know that he died of TB. He is not in the Church records of Dannemora or in the death records for that town. So I wondered if I could look in that area for an institure or Cure House record of that time period of the 1880"S . Also, do you know what the Catholic churches were there in the areas of the TB institutes. Thank You Margo
Raybrook, it is between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid was a huge TB hospital and Saranac Lake also had a few private homes that took care of people. My mother was a nurse and I as a child met and visited with different patients. Could you tell me where I can obtain books on the History of towns of Clinton County. Is there a lot of family information to obtain from them. Also does anyone have knowledge where a person would go if dying from TB if living in the Dannemora area in the 1880"s. Thank You, Margo
Hi Margo, The Trudeau Institute in Franklin County, (Saranac Lake) in NY and this area was all for curing. What are you looking for...I have a book with some historical names for TB. The history of Chazy book talks about Simeon Wood (my 3rd g grandfather) coming to Chazy in abt 1800 for a variety of things, and going back to Shoreham VT in the winter to be with his friends. Rather than missing information because of it, I found stories in books from both places. Debra, I believe that it was common for families to move back and forth between the two counties. Our family had folks living in both places, and my ggggrandfather, James CARROLL (while a resident of Plattsburgh) enlisted during the Civil War from Grand Isle. Hi, Would like to see answers to question about families from Clinton County crossing over back and forth to Vermont posted to the list. I think a number of us are stuck in our research because of this possibility as ancestors appear and disappear from censuses and parishes. Andree researching Belec/Belecque/Baylake Lague/Lahue
Hi, Does anyone know anything about the Vaughn's crossing back and forth from Vermont and Canada? Jim ( [email protected] )

Her parents were Horace and Alice A.Merrihew (age 68 and 59 in the 1880 census of Altona, Clinton, NY. Arthur and Lucy had four daughters and lived in the Beekmantown-Altona area. The Rural Cemetery in West Chazy, however, has a gravestone for Horace and "his wife Olive A. Stiles/1822-1887", as well as one for "Arthur McKenney and his wife Lucy." Arthur's father was James McKinney, who married Nancy Brace and lived in the same area during part of his later life. There is ALSO another line of McKinneys with at least two James McKinneys and an Arthur McKinney in the Plattsburgh-Clinton area. I come from this second McKinney line in the Plattsburgh/Clinton County. I don't know much about the Merrihews, but perhaps from the Merrihew side there is information to help me sort out these two McKinney lines and to find out where Arthur's father (James McKinney) came from. There is some chance that both lines came to NY from Maine. Will be glad to hear from you or others on the list who know of this conjunction of McKinney and Merrihew families and can help clarify the confusion. Numerous families (Roberts and Martin are the ones I know about) had both Grand Isle and Plattsburgh relatives at various times, and in the winter one could cross on the ice. Travel to and from Cumberland Head and Burlington was also common. The journal of David Kellogg, MD, a physician practicing in Plattsburgh between the 1880s and 1910, includes some examples of such travel. I think he attended medical school in Burlington, and at least one of his sons attended UVM. (A charming book, edited by Allan Everest and published in 1970 by the Stephen Greene Press of Brattleboro, VT. I lucked into a $5 used book price, but I doubt you could do that well now.) Yes, the MERRIHEWS for one.
I have Miller/Stone (Joseph Miller m. Marguerite Stone) relatives who were both born in Clinton Co. in the 1820s, appeared in Chittenden Co., VT in the 1860s, then are lost track of, although their daughter Louise Laura is buried in North Hero--and I have an unsubstantiated note that says they are there, too. Does anyone know if it was common in the 1800's for residents of Clinton Co. to migrate across the lake to Grand Isle Co., Vermont, and back? Were there families that had relatives living in both counties on a frequent basis? Debra
Hi Laura, Here are the Archive Addresses. I am sure that you could probably write to them for general (family) information as well as military. Once my mail slows down a bit, I am going to attempt just that with Clinton County. You know how difficult they can be. :-D Enjoy the list and hope you get great results. I have put out a plea for anyone that has a web address for a state archive to send it to me so I can add that to the state list. I have added one for the state of Tenn. The person said they used this site for a military question and got the results in the mail within a week. Not bad. Hi Lists, If anyone should know the website address for a state archive, I would like to add that to the state information. I just received the addresses for the Tennessee State archives and have added it to the Tennessee information. Thanks for your help and also saving me a lot of work in looking all this up myself. Hi Robert, Here is your list. I also gave it to the web owner of the Clinton Co. webpage. I asked her to post it somewhere on the page. Hope you get good results.
