Hammond Syracuse: Truair, Smith, & Co., Job Printers. 1872 Chapter: Chapter XII. Madison Page: 590 Madison Excerpt: ..."There were three of the Maynard brothers: -- Jesse [Maynard], the pioneer of 1792, who resided in town but a few years; Amos [Maynard], a young man, who afterwards married and settled near the Center, on the same lot with Jesse; and Moses [Maynard], who came some years later with his family, and finally settled near Bouckville. Amos Maynard was the first Military Captain in town, served through the war of 1812, and rose to the rank of Colonel. He is remembered as an officer of splendid military being and presence. We remark here that the sword carried by Capt. Maynard during the war, became, and is still, the property of Mr. Orrin Chase, of Eaton, who was a Captain of Militia. Moses Maynard, distinguished himself in various official capacities, and was one of the chief projectors of the Chenango Canal. ..." Town of Madison Page: 610 SETTLEMENTS. -- ....." This same year (1792 or 1793) Jesse Maynard came in from the east and took up a farm on lot 45, about a mile south of Madison village, on lands now owned by Lewis W. Curtis. He did not remain long in the town, however. His brothers, Amos [Maynard] and Moses [Maynard], came in somewhat later, Amos as early as 1798 and Moses as early as 1801. Amos was a young, single man, and married and settled on the same lot as Jesse, on lands now owned by _____Austin and Lewis W. Curtis, at the Center. He and his first wife died on that farm. Amos was the fist military captain in the town. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, and rose to the rank of Colonel. MOSES [MAYNARD] CAME WITH HIS FAMILY, WHICH WAS LARGE, AND LOCATED IN MADISON VILLAGE, where he kept a tavern for many years. He afterwards built the hotel at Bouckville and died there May 27, 1853, aged 77.'' ========================================================= History of Chenango and Madison Counties, New York : with illustrations and biographical sketches of some to its prominent men Chapter: Chapter XL.
