Does anyone know where Reuben Smith who received land on the authority of acts of the Leislature May 1786 and March 20 1788 came from or who he is related to. We have a Reuben Smith in our family but ours is much too young to be this Reuben. This particular one is listed in the Co of Montgomery in the township of Clinton (??). and that I assume later became part of Chenango Co. This Lot 58 was approved by the commisions of the land office January 12 1789 and recorded Nov. 12 1885. In addition to Reuben Smith receiving land from New York, the following Smiths also received land: Melaneton Smith, Seth Smith, Israel Smith, and William S. Smith. Does anyone know anything about these people and why they could receive land from NY.
