He was born November 23, 1927 in New Berlin, New York, son of Gerald & Madge Hughes. After serving in the Army Air Corps in North Africa & Europe, he returned to his hometown of Hartwick, New York and married Beverly Fuller on July 9, 1949. He was a dairy farmer in Franklin for many years and later became a real estate broker and owned several small businesses. He is survived by his wife Carole Eldridge of Westfield, daughters & sons-in-law: Yvonne & Michael Cleaver of New York, Colleen & James Smith of Westfield, Karen & Harrold Bedford of New York; sons & daughters-in-law: Gary & Alice Hughes of New York, Alan & Mona Hughes of New York & Jack & Sheryl Hughes of Tennessee; grandchildren, JoAnn, Kathy, Lori, Justin, Ryan, Nathan, Christine, Kelly, Jacqueline and Vanessa, five great-grandchildren, sister, Doris Powers (William) of Milford, New York and close friend, Beverly Jackson of Westfield. There will be no formal service or visitation. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Stokes County Animal Shelter, 1999 Sizemore Rd., Germanton, NC 27019.
