Anne, At first I was going to say, sorry don't see any connections to your Rachel. My Almeda (Amy) Gates was married to Sanford B. Burdick and in Pharsalia in 1850. They lived next to their parents. Almeda was the daughter of Rathbun Gates and Mary Lewis. They also lived near to of her brothers Thomas and Eleazer. Your Elijah and Antonette were in North Norwich in 1850, w/ children Simon D 7, John 4, and Mary or May 1. No obvious ties. However, going back one more generation it does look more interesting. Almeda's grandparents were Simeon Gates b. 1757 d. 1829 and Ruth Ann Rathbone (Rathbun) b. 1762 d. 1828 who were born in RI but died in Norwich, Chenango Co. They had children Rathbun b. 1786, d. 11/10/1869 bd McDonough Union Cemetery, Chenango Co. Ruth b. 1793, m James McNitt, d. 7/4/1871 bd. New Hope Cemetery, Norwich 1st Section NE corner Simeon (or Simon) Jr b. 1796 m. Mahitta died in 1783 in Norwich. bd. Simeon Gates farm in Norwich, Oxford Rd. Aaron Gates b. 1801 m. Rowena d. 4/21/ 1881 bd. New Hope Cemetery, Norwich Asel Gates Newman Gates b. 1806 m. Sarah. d. 4/2/1880 buried New Hope Cemetery, Norwich Simeon b. 1757 left a will leaving home farm to Aaron B and family Bible to Simeon My info comes from Censuses, family history performed by my aunt. Most of her work was not cited, but in this case she mentions "Gates family Bible owned by Mrs. Irene Gates of Norwich." Don't know if this is the bible mentioned in Simeon's will. I did check Simon Gates in the 1840 US Census in Norwich. He has 2 boys 14<20, 1 girl 5<10, 1 girl 10<15, 3 girls 15<20, plus he and his wife. In 1850 he has Mahitta, Juliet 24, George 21, Almira 19. A quick look at ancestry trees, folks only list Juliet and George as children, thus there are quite a few of his offspring unaccounted for including girls of age of your Rachel. In 1840, he lives a few household from James McNitt (probably his brother-in-law) and there are also some Rathbone's (Squire and Daniel) which may be relatives. Also interesting on the next page of the 1840 census are Justin Graves and Albert Tiffany who are NEIGHBORS of your Elijah and Antonette Smith in 1850 in North Norwich.... Sounds suspicious!! So can't confirm anything for you, but my bets are that my Almeda and your Rachel could very well be 1st cousins. Rachel's parents might be Simon and Mahitta... What do you think?? Looks like the wills of Simeon Jr (Simon) and Aaron Gates exist and could be ordered through www.sampub.com if you were interested.
