I have a land record (Indenture) for my great-great-great grandfather executed in January 1815 for a piece of property in Chenango County, New York. I need help in identifying the location of this land. The following is a description of the property from the record found in the book of deeds Book X, page 33 and 34, in Norwich, NY: …unto the said William Barstow and to his heirs and assigns forever all that certain Lot or/and of land situate in the Town of Easton and county of Chenango aforesaid known & distinguished as Lot number four in the Subdivision of great Lot number forty three bounded and the North of Lands of Nathaniel Copley on the east on Land of Sherman Rice on the South on Land sold to Nehemiah Yale and on the West on the west line of said great lot number forty three containing forty three acres and two … There is no Town of Easton at this time in Chenango County according to the maps I have seen. I understand that a Town in New York is different than it is elsewhere. The grantors in this transaction were from the village of Newburgh, in the county of Orange and Kingston in the county of Ulster. Barstow is listed as of the Town of Easton in the county of Chenango & State of New York. Hopefully, there is someone out there that may know the history of the possible changes in names for Towns in Chenango County. Perhaps the location can be found by the description of the lot numbers. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Don Sanford
