If you think that the Constable/Sheriff's office has any pictures of the past Constables, let me know. The New Berlin historian didn't seem to think they would. At fultonhistory.com I found a newspaper article about one of the more interesting arrests that my Great Grandfather made in 1912. "Hair raising pursuit", a hostage -- what drama for the time. Thanks again, Cheryl EXERCPT: AUBURN SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL, MAY 7, 1912 PAGE 3 DUEL WITH REVOLVERS. New Berlin Constable Got His Man After an Exciting Pursuit New Berlin, May 6.-After engaging in a thrilling duel with revolvers, in which both men were wounded, Constable Charles Holdridge, noted hereabouts for his daring, captured Arthur Carpenter, 35, of Columbus, Chenango county, for whom he had a warrant charging him with threatening to commit a homicide. Early in the fight, which followed a hair-raising 14-mile pursuit, Carpenter held before him as a shield Mrs. George Spurt, wife of the man who swore out the warrant for his arrest and upon whose farm the shooting occurred. The prisoner, when placed in custody, attempted to commit suicide by hanging. He was cut down just in time and will recover.
