    3. found a searchable website that has early New York Abstracts of Wills and Letters of Administration, for Free ! You can search by county and surname. newenglandancestors.org click on Research It has other databases, but they require you to join the organization. I found some good information on the Wylie family there. Some of them lived in Broome County but apparently filed in Chenango. Note- they are handwritten and some are hard to read. Example: Said is abbreviated as sd. evelyn

    1. [NYCHENAN] update 6/25/07
    2. Tim Stowell
    3. Since my last update which was on 3/4 - For this update - ====================== Cortland County - Balance of biographies from Smith's 1885 History of Cortland county: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycortla/smithhis.htm An interesting bunch of bios. One thing I learned from these is that Cincinnatus used to be in Onondaga county. A few more biographies from the 1898 biography book: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/cortland/books/1898bios.htm Brown, Bentley, Underwood plus 8 portraits of persons whose biographies were previously posted. ====================== Chenango County - At long last the complete 1951 County, City, Town Officers of Chenango County contributed by Jack Eaton was placed on-line. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nychenan/1951dir.htm ====================== Madison County - Chapter 42 of the 1880 History of Madison County: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/madison1/books/1880-42.htm history of schools in Madison and Chenango counties on a general nature. Very interesting reading. One fact I learned was that pupils were subjected to punishments worse than what was allowed in the prisons of that time. =============================================================== In other news I'm continuing the addition of cemeteries in Barker Township in Broome County http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/broome/barker.htm as well as the 1872 business directory which will have histories of the towns and a directory of people in each town. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/broome/books/1872dir.htm ----------------------------------------------- In my note of 4/20 to the lists I stated: "On another front I'm in the process or have already picked items for Chenango and Madison counties which I'll be adding to the assorted web sites later in the year." So here's what I've picked up to add as I can: Chenango - Board of Supervisors - Journal of Proceedings - 1925 Cortland - County Directory - 1902 Madison - Supervisors Journal - 1925 and 1932 The Chenango book has 415 pages, Madison has 210 and 276 respectively and the Cortland book has 523 pages. Frankly some of this is boring as watching dust bunnies grow but here and there some neat stuff appears. There's the dog tax, bovine TB eradication, coroner's inquests are a few of the subjects. ----------------------------------------------- At some point I'll be seeking list sitters for these lists as at some point this fall I'll be away for about a month. I don't have all my ducks in a row for my away time, so at this point I have no exact schedule when this will occur. In the meantime, I'm in the midst of coding another book for Cortland County. Tim

    1. [NYCHENAN] FRANKLIN Family Inquiry
    2. Neil Boyden Tanner
    3. I'm curious if anyone has any additional information about the following family that migrated to Chenango County. In particular, I'd like to learn Margaret's maiden name. For anyone interested, I have additional ancestry and descendant information. Aaron FRANKLIN was born on 11 Feb 1728 in Swansea, MA. He died in 1829/1830 in East Pharsalia, NY. Aaron served in the military and was a member of the "Silver Greys" which was a company of old men too old to otherwise serve. He died in 1829/1830. Aaron married Margaret ?. Margaret and Aaron Franklin were also the great great grandparents of President Calvin Coolidge (Calvin - Victoria Moor COOLIDGE - Abigail Franklin MOOR - Luther Franklin - Jabez Franklin - Margaret and Aaron Franklin), the 30th President of the United States. They had the following children: (1) Jabez Franklin -- born in 1759 in Scituate, RI and died on 26 Feb 1829 in Guilford, VT. Jabez married Sarah STARR. Sarah was born on 28 Nov 1760 in Killingly, Connecticut. She died on 20 Aug 1805 in Guilford, NY. (2) Moses Franklin -- born on 24 Oct 1763 in Scituate, RI and died on 4 Feb 1854 in East Springfield, Otsego Co., NY. Moses enlisted in the Continental Army when he was about fourteen years old and served as a scout for nine months in the area of Massachusetts to Lake Champlain. After his discharge from the army he enlisted in the navy but soon after leaving port the ship he was on was returned on account of unfitness of the ship's commander. He then shipped in a merchant vessel but just before peace was declared the ship and crew were captured by a British privateer and the crew was put ashore on one of the West Indies Islands. He made his way back to America and to Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., N. Y. and became a farmer. He drew a pension for his army service. (3) Aaron Franklin -- born about 1766. (4) Jeremy Franklin -- born before 1770 in Scituate, RI. (5) Benjamin Franklin -- born in 1770 in Scituate, RI or VT and died on 9 Aug 1847 in Preston, Chenango County, NY. He was buried in East Pharsalia Cemetery, Pharsalia, Chenango County, NY. Benjamin Franklin and his wife Sarah BENNETT came to Chenango County, NY with their nine children from Windham Co. Vt., over the Green Mountains, via Cherry Valley turnpike in a covered wagon drawn by oxen (except for Stephen the oldest son, who was married to Betsey Ashcraft of Connecticut who came on horseback -- both riding the same horse). They stopped for a while at Cherry Valley, then came from there to Pharsalia, Chenango County and settled in 1815. Pharsalia had been set off from Norwich in the year 1806. It is recorded in the county clerk's office that Benjamin and Sarah Franklin from McDonough bought a farm in Preston from William Packer in 1844. In early life, Benjamin was said to have been a democrat, but that he was ever a man who had the courage of his convictions, and when the principles of that party failed to coincide with his ideas he became identified with the Whigs and later with the Republican party. He was also a member of the Baptist church of which he was for many years Deacon. Sarah was born about 1775 in VT. She died on 24 Mar 1855 in Preston, NY. She was buried in East Pharsalia Cemetery, Pharsalia, NY. (6) Martha Franklin. (7) Elizabeth Franklin. Elizabeth married Aaron BENNETT.
