    3. I wish I lived closer because I'd be doing the same thing and trust me, I'm scared to death of spiders, snakes, etc., but if it were maintained on a regular basis, it wouldn't be so bad. I don't think the Blackman Cemetery on Hwy 12 is my families, but I know the Heady's Corner/Blackman Cemetery on Hwy 19 is my family, and all Blackman's buried there are my ancestors. It makes me sick that I'm in Kansas and can't even get there to see it, let alone actually take care of them. 2. The maintenance of those small abandoned cemeteries is the responsibility of the town the cemetery is located in. All the town has to do is mow them about 3 times a year. It is not the county's responsibility. The NYS Cemetery Board is the state agency in charge of cemeteries. 3. Hello, I am looking for a John BLACKMAN family that would have been in the New Berlin area in the very early 1800s. The father in this family was a cabinet and chairmaker who worked in a New Berlin machine shop. A daughter, Sally Blackman, married Nehemiah Dyer. Sally (Blackman) Dyer is buried in the Dyer Cemetery in New Berlin. Ken Brown The following from "Historical Sketches of Olde New Berlin:" "Mr. Nehemiah Dyer worked in the old cotton factory several years and after accumulating a sufficient sum to enable him to buy a wild lot, he purchased the lot back of the Great Brook, which he cleared up and lived on until his decease, leaving a good property to his wife and children. His wife was a daughter of John Blackman, who worked in the machine shop with Dyer. This Mr. Blackman was by trade a cabinet and chair-maker, and a first-rate workman. Mr. Dyer was a good farmer and a much respected citizen. His wife made cheese of a superior quality, and better adapted to the taste of lovers of good cheese than can be found in modern cheese-making factories. Mr. Dyer left his estate to his wife and children. One of his sons married a daughter of William Jackson, a wagon-maker, who was an emigrant from England." ----- Original Message ----- From: "Melissa Blackman" <roseladym@yahoo.com> To: <nychenan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 01, 2007 8:11 PM Subject: [NYCHENAN] Clarification on the "Blackman" Cemeteries > Hello group. 3. Hello group. I'm in need of help!!! A very helpful member sent me some wonderful pictures and directions of how to locate the "Blackman Cemetery". However, I have many reasons to believe that everything she sent me is for the wrong cemetery. Let me explain further. Via many links on the internet, I have known of two Blackman Cemeteries in Chenango County. One, the most commonly referred to, is also the Heady's Corners Cemetery. All of the Blackman's buried in there are my family. There has been a list for many years on the internet of the people interred there. This helpful member sent me a photograph of one of the only markers legible in the cemetery and it is for a Jabez Blackman. But this person has never been listed on the Heady's Corners/Blackman Cemetery list, that I'm aware of. Also, the directions she sent me of how to drive there, indicate it's on Hwy. 12 between Oxford and Norwich. After doing some research tonight I've discovered that I think the Blackman Cemetery on Hwy. 12 is not Heady's Corner, but rather the "other" Blackman Cemetery that I've seen listed on this map, but have never been able to find any information on it. This map indicates that the Heady's Corner/Blackman Cemetery is on Hwy. 19. I think that all along, we've been talking about two different cemeteries. The page that has given me maps of both these cemeteries is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rsaft/cccl.html Can anyone in the area clarify this for me? I'm in Kansas and can't do a thing from here to try and find either of these. I'm so confused at this point. Thanks for listening to my ramblings!!! Melissa in Kansas City, KS

    2. Lucy Sannick, age 59, appears in the 1880 Norwich census with her husband, Samuel, ae 75.? She appears there in 1900 as Lucy V.Sanix, ae 79 and in 1910 as Lucy Samucks, ae 88.? Also there in 1870 as Lucy Samucks, ae 46.? She had two daughters, nee Holdridge, who survived her. I am interested in any additional information about Lucy, esp. her obituary. 3. Yes, this cemetery is directly behind a private residence and one can have a very hard time locating it because the house pretty much conceals the whole cemetery. I do not know if the cemetery is part of residence's property or not. I have been to this cemetery on a couple occasions and there is no other way to reach this cemetery other than crossing the private residence's land. The best way to reach it is walk up the driveway. Also, the cemetery is in such disrepair probably because it is so hard to access and also for the fact that there are a certain amount of graves that have sunken in quite badly, so mowing would be a real chore.... My Chenango County Thompsons begin w/ Charles Thompson (b. 1780-1781 in Connecticut) married to Ruby Kingsley. I have been unable to tie this Charles to any of his ancestors. The earliest I have him is the 1830 census in Linklaen, Chenango Co, not far from Pharsalia. (But I don't know where he was previously). He has a son Charles. This Charles has two sons Charles and James. I haven't seen names Randolph or Thaddeus. In 1840 and 1850 (still Linklaen) the eldest Charles lives next door to an Aaron Thompson (b. VT). Probably a relative, maybe a nephew?? If you have any info on above Thompsons, or find any ties to them, would be interested to hear. My father and I found Hazzard Corner Cemetery early last month, and I was grieved to see its condition. It is located on North Rd. in Triangle - just about on the Broome - Chenango line. We were actually there a week after Memorial Day, and although the cemetery is in disrepair, someone still had put new flags on the graves of veterans, which helped us find a Revolutionary War ancestor. Even though this is technically in Broome County, being as it's right on the border I'm sure that this is a Chenango County interest also. Does anyone know how to go about getting a cemetery cared for that has fallen into neglect? I live out of state, but would like to see what can be done. Thanks! 3. You may want to contact a local boy scout troop, a local scout may decide to take on the restoration of the cemetery as his Eagle Scout project or perhaps the entire local troop would go out and clean it up as a yearly project. Cemetery preservation is a very good way to get the scouts interested in genealogy and the importance of well preserved cemeteries. Lorraine Leslie Besmer
