Thanking you all in advance:...Al To Kathryn : SKS===SOME KIND SOUL...usually of the "I've got time, to spare, so I'll help so-and-so..." Sort...really nice folks who appreciate that sometimes when you have reached the end of the line, you need help. Some have access to resources that others don't, so "we" share. I am searching for Nathaniel Smith, who md Lucy Lynde. I have one acknowledged daughter, (Mary) Polly Smith who md Solomon Thompson. I am sure of all save for what happened to Nathaniel, Lucy, and their family following the 1771-2 census for Guilford, VT/NY where they are noted with Lucy's brother Samuel and sister-in-law, Sarah Bemis. The 1772 census you reference is for Guilford, Windham Co, Vermont which is about 190 miles from Guilford, Chenango Co, NY. I found the USGenWeb site for Windham Vt has a lot of good info and perhaps the answers you seek. Hope this helps. By now, most of you are familiar with the Guilford NY/VT 1772 Census at http://www.genealogy-quest.com/collections/nyguilford.html Of particular interest to me is only one entry: "Nathl Smith, a wife and 5 children." They are my 7xgp's. Nathaniel Smith md Lucy Lamb-Lynde, had one known daughter, Mary "Polly" Smith, and four unknowns, according to the census mentioned. Other Smiths on the list are of an unknown relationship. One known connection is Daniel Lynde, his wife Sarah Bemis/Bemos/Bemis, and 4 children. Daniel was Lucy's brother. Particulars re: the Lyndes may be found at [...] where brother, Daniel Lynde, h/o Rebecca "Lizzy" Perkins is missing. http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2258777&id=I502654021 To further complicate things, young Polly Smith: [Brimfield VR to 1850: Polly ( Smi[torn] )[Smith, T.C.] and Solomon Thompson, July 13, 1786.* [Smith, C.R.] ] is found back near her birth place Leicester, Worcester, MA. Nathaniel, raised in Leicester, MA, removes, with family to Guilford, at some point prior to 1772. There are quite a few Smiths and Lyndes in the area much before that time and after...but no Nathaniel, or any evidence of his family. Thus the months of searching. Nathaniel is at the nexus of my remaining research...he must be found! I further believe that he moved on from Guilford following/during the "troubles" and may have gone back to MA. There are lots of Nathaniel Smiths in NYS, but with no corroborating evidence...I cannot tell if any one of them is the one that I am searching for. P/S I post none of my research on the internet, when asked not to... I do share info with those who share with me...so do not fear that I am about to steal anything and take the credit for it. Seven Spanish War veterans and their wives were honored guests at the affair. A delicious ham supper served by a committee headed by Mr. and Mrs. Sam Vanderlaan started the festivities. During the evening an entertaining floor show was provided by members if the post and auxilary. Communal signing led by Rose Cappadona rounded out one of the most enjoyable parties of the year. Those taking part in the floor show included: Richard Mendelhall, Myrtle Medelhall, Lew Evans, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Vandelaan, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Palmer, Mrs. Jo Woodward, and music by Sam Pertilla. Henry Cabler, head of the Spanish War vets, thanked the Post and auxiliary for the honors bestowed. Commander A. Wesley Gould gave a brief history of post 2782 and also expressed a few thoughts on the Spanish War veterans anniversary. Post Chaplain Peter Chrispell of Sherburne led in prayer. Spanish War veterans present were Henry Gabler, Samuel Litts, Almon Wassung, Henry Hogancamp, Howard Phillips, Nelson Defoe and Daniel Arlien. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Harold B. WELCH which was taken at the J. W. Richie & Co. Studio in Greene, NY. The following is the biographical sketch of Sylvanus Moore, written by his son Lysander, when 93 years of age: "He was one of the early settlers of Chenango Co., making the first settlement in the town of McDonough, emigrating from Simsbury, Conn., in 1795. In Oxford he met Henry W. Ludlow from New York, who had come here for the purpose of promoting the settlement of a large tract of land owned by his father in the town. From overtures made by Mr. Ludlow, among them a promise to speedily erect a sawmill upon the tract, Mr. Moore concluded to look at the land. He penetrated 5 miles an unbroken wilderness, following a line of blazed trees before he found a suitable location. He contracted for two hundred acres in the southeast part of the town and immediately commenced the work of clearing the land where he lived till he was 81 years old, and where he was finally buried. "His wealth consisted of his clothes, an axe and a few shillings in money. With the latter he procured a few days rations in Oxford and started with a stout heart and an indomitable will to carve the future history of the Moore family in Chenango Co. He soon succeeded to the agency of the Ludlow lands in the county on account of the dissipation of the son. This brought him into prominence with the people of the town where he successively held all the offices in the gift of the people." There were 12 children, 8 by the first marriage and 4 by the last. I'm still looking for more information on Stephen Fosbury b. 1750 in Windsor, Ct. He was in the Rev. War in Conn. I know nothing of his life. I have two sons for him: Reuben b. ca 1807 in Bainbridge, Chen. Co., and James C. b. 1809 ibid. Since these children were born when Stephen was about 57 and 59, surely he has an earlier wife and other children. I feel confident that Stephen Fosbury was originally Vosburgh. Perhaps there is a connection to the Stephen Fosbury/Vosburgh of Schoharie Co., the Vosburys of Broome Co., Jacob Vosburgh of Herkimer Co who was b. in Conn., but I don't know the exact location. I've been researching the Vosburgh families and it's variant spellings for many years. This Stephen is a "toughie". Years ago I did an investigation of James C. Fosbury for Eleanor Beemsterboer of Grayslake, Ill. She is deceased now. Reuben is in Bainbridge, Chenango Co. with his family. The 1855 will give his birth place. Is that known by any listers? Deanna Vosburgh Smith
