Hi. I don't want to get your hopes up, but I had a client searching this man and I did his Montgomery Co. work. I can't share the information unless I get his permission. We worked together at least 2 years ago so the file may be in my freezing cold store room. I can't remember the client's name right now or I would just simply give you his email address and you could make direct contact. Another idea, in the meantime :~), would be to go over to the Montgomery Co. NY mailing list and ask for the man who was searching the Armstrong-Ferguson line of Montgomery Co., work done by his research specialist Deanna Smith. Hopefully he will still be using that site. I'm printing this email out and will keep it on file. The only Solomon Armstrong in the Vt. Books was b. 1821-too late for your interests. Nothing for Henry or John Ferguson. By chance did your Solomon Armstrong ever live in Montgomery Co, NY? The name sounds familiar to me. In Bowman's, Vital Records Central NY from Newspapers, p 84, there is a John Ferguson who died Sept. 4, 1832, age 54 in NYC. He was a Naval Officer and a former Mayor of NYC, also a Judge of the Marine Court Oddly, this entry gives no information as to what Newspaper it was found in. OOPS ! My mistake, I should have checked my notes first, not my "old" Memory. Bainbridge, Chenango Co., New York was set off by the state for the "Vermont Sufferers". These were folk who, because of their standing with the state of New York in a controversy over lands claimed by both, but in the end ceded to Vermont, were dispossessed of their property in the Green Mountain State. To make good in a measure of their losses, New York set off the part of Afton and Bainbridge to these "sufferers" The first settler came in 1784. While you Button folk are online, Can any of you identify Amy Button, b. abt Oct 1769 d. Mar 28, 1854 and buried in Brookfield. She married Nathan Wells Brown. Her daughter marries the son of Lawton Palmer Jr. and Nancy Button. Nancy is a daughter of John Button and Anna McCoon. I suspect she is somehow related to these Button's but I have never been able to figure out how. I only have info on John and Anna's line. My understanding was that there was no migration, only the state boundaries changed, Is that incorrect ? Until I came over here to the Chenango Mailing list, I didn't know of the "Vermont Sufferers to New York". Was this because of the boundry problems? I do know there was a large migration from Vt. to NY State. The Vermont Families 1791 2 vol. speak of the Vermont out-migration, which likely refers to the Vermonters who came to NY. In the Introduction in Vol. 1, the person editing this source, Scott A. Bartley, said that the data is the study of the migratory families and that the family information is given by submitters. Vt. was added as a State in 1791 and was officially enumerated in 1791. I am a member of the PURPLE family that came into the US in the 1800's from Wales and would love to work on present French ancesters as well as some that came from Wales from a merchant that came to Wales in the 1600's and married and stayed there- his family coming to the US in the 1800's. I have an extensive listing of present family members. Barbara Purple Laviers.

Deanna, You just may have found my gggg-grandfather's will. According to her obituary Jennie (Lydia Jane) WHEELER was born in Oriskany Falls on 9 Sept 1852. She married my gg-grandfather Frank (Francis Delay) LORD in Augusta on 23 December 1869. Jennie's death certificate lists her father as either John or James (the handwriting is sloppy) and her mother as unknown. Frank and Jennie lived in Pharsalia after their marriage with Frank's parents, David LORD and Livonia BROWN LORD. Livonia's parents were Benjamin BROWN and Phebe BROWN BROWN (maiden name same as married, no apparent kinship), both of whom were born in Stonington CT. I thought perhaps Jennie's father might be James Harvey WHEELER of Pharsalia. His parents were Benson H. Wheeler and Olive Hooker CALHOUN WHEELER. Unfortunately I have no proof of that connection. I do know that James Harvey WHEELER died in 1921 in Cortland NY where he had been living with a niece. I've not be able to locate an obit for him. Any guidance will be most appreciated! Maybe adding to the picture, and maybe not!!!! I own a 1902 Chenango Co. Directory which lists residents in all the various towns (townships) and villages (also cities) in Chenango Co. in the early 1900's.. There are the following BUTTON residents in Pharsalia: Benjamin P., Charles D. and Reuben O. Let me know if you wish further details from the directory: occupation, mailing addr., property owned. Hello Marti, you have to be "my" Marti from years ago and correspondence re: BIXBY and HACKETT, right? Well, now I read that you have SLATER. So, does my husband and I have been working on his lines lately! His 4g grandmother was Hannah SLATER, b 1774 VT. She married Ezra GLEASON (nothing further re: him) and they were the parents of five children born in New York: Clarissa, 1799; Electa, 1802; Louisa, 1804; John, 1809; and Sarah, 1812. Most of the children migrated to Ohio near the Michigan border. Because the name SLATER is often spelled SLAFTER, we were able to find this family in the "Memorial of John Slafter..." by the Rev. Edmund F. Slafter, 1869. You probably know all that but, if not, you might find it helpful. At any rate, it was Deanna's question, "What was the reason for movement of so many from parts of Vt. to Chenango Co.?" that prompted me to write. Just last week, I discovered the probable reason Floyd's BAILEYs left Vermont: the "1838 Rebellion" when the French in lower Canada (Quebec) and the English in upper Canada (Ontario) were joined by many U.S. citizens in an abortive attempt to overthrow the British government. In the "Yesterdays of Brome County [Canada]," 1980, I found the following, "The rebel party consisted of Captain Ira A. Bailey, Jonathan Bailey ..." Those two were uncles of John G. Bailey, Floyd's gg grandfather, and brought him with them to Ohio/Michigan [another border dispute]. :ol I hope this hasn't been too much information. But it was fun to see your name again and to share.
