    1. [NYCHENAN] Family of Ichabod White - Norwich
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bolexboy Surnames: White, Snow Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.chenango/1290/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, Looking for information on the family of Ichabod White. Born 1757 in MA and died 1813 in Norwich, Chenango, NY. Wife was Rhoda Hoag 1758-Aft1850. She appears as a Revolutionary War pensioner on the 1840 census. Would like information on Revolutionary War service and info concerning their sons and daughters. 1810 census shows family of Ichabod White with four sons and three daughters. I believe them to be: David S., William, Jonathan, Unknown Son, Phoebe (Snow) and two unknown daughters. At least three of the brothers moved to Sergeant, McKean, Pennsylvania. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Greg Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I love this thread! Thank you Teresa for starting this! 1. [NYCHENAN] A story for Mother's day
    2. Several years ago, I visited Norwich and stopped at the Historical Society. I did some research and bought a few books they had published. One ,"Way Back of Sundown" by Ella E. Gridley I read and set aside. I recently picked it up again and read it for the second time. This is a quote from page 23: "Abraham Ives' wife, like other pioneer women believed that frequent mopping caused wooden floors to rot. When her son, Samuel, married and brought home his wife, the young bride was troubled because the kitchen floor was not scrubbed more often. She used to get up in the middle of the night when everyone was sound asleep and go down to scrub the floor. By morning it was dry and so there was peace. " To my astonishment, I realized that Samuel Ives was my GGG Grandfather and his wife, Lucy Ann Atwater, my GGG Grandmother. They were married on Jan. 5, 1797 in New Haven County, CT. They moved to Ives Settlement, in Guilford. And as I read on, I found many more stories of the Ives family and the events of everyday life in pioneer times in Chenango County. They were told to Ella Gridley and all the stories have footnotes as to the source. It is delight reading and in my case, a rare glimpse of an ancestor! For the record the line is: Abraham Ives m. Eunice Hull Samuel Ives m. Lucy Ann Atwater Lucy Ann Ives m. James S. Edgerton Clara H. Tyler m. Isaac Edgerton Lillian Edgerton m. George M. Hackett Clara Hackett m. Robert Randall Marti......me They also have another book, "Few Are Left to Know" by Ella Gridley. It contains folklore of Chenango County volume II and more footnoted sources for the stories. But sadly, they are not indexed by people mentioned or family. Marti Randall **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Get new twists on family favorites at AOL Food. 3. Hmm, if the second Simeon's death date is Oct 1, 1830, that can't be the will of Simeon/Simon in the 1850 US Census, and the one possibly Rachel's father. Oh Well. Maybe there will be some other tie. 3. I couldn't agree more. I've had great success following aunts, uncles, and cousins, particularly of the Sweets and Wrights in Glocester and Smithfield, Providence, Rhode Island 1750 - 1800. I am still looking for ZEBEDEE MATHEWSON who married a daughter of Jeremiah Sweet, Naomi (Nahomy), abt 1780 in RI. Also looking for REUBEN ALDRICH who married another of Jeremiah's daughters, Olive. I had great success with PELEG PECK who married another of Jeremiah's daughter Betsey and removed with at least three related families (Rutenbur, Williams, and more) to Fly Creek/Burlington Flats, Otsego County, NY by 1795. Some of these also moved on to New Berlin and surrounding towns in Chenango. Jeremiah Sweet only had two sons, Benajah, and Philip. I don't think that either left RI. Philip died before Jeremiah. Jeremiah's will notes the children of Philip: Freelove and Hannah! With all you noted plus the Mathewsons and Aldrichs in Chenango there must be hundreds of connections by now! 3. As an aside, there seems to have been a regular intertwining of the Sweet and Wright families (with a smattering of Holcombs as well). You note: Patience Sweet, b. 1757 Gloucester, RI, dau of Jeremiah Sweet and Freelove Wright In my tree I have: 1) Marriage of Elijah Sweet (1748-1838) and Elizabeth Wright (1751-1827)(Broome Co) 2) Marriage of James K Sweet (1813-1896) and Hannah Wright (1812-1874) (Chenango Co) 3) Lorinda D Thurston (1829-1866), daughter of Elisha Thurston (1798-1874) and Lovice Sweet (1800-1876) married John Calvin Wright (1825-1906) (Chenango, Otsego, Herkimer cos.) The point being that these families seem to have moved from one part of the country to another together. In my case, it helped me unravel two more generations of my Wright line. My Almeda (Amy) Gates was married to Sanford B. Burdick and in Pharsalia in 1850. They lived next to their parents. Almeda was the daughter of Rathbun Gates and Mary Lewis. They also lived near to of her brothers Thomas and Eleazer. Your Elijah and Antonette were in North Norwich in 1850, w/ children Simon D 7, John 4, and Mary or May 1. No obvious ties. However, going back one more generation it does look more interesting. Almeda's grandparents were Simeon Gates b. 1757 d. 1829 and Ruth Ann Rathbone (Rathbun) b. 1762 d. 1828 who were born in RI but died in Norwich, Chenango Co. Most of her work was not cited, but in this case she mentions "Gates family Bible owned by Mrs. Irene Gates of Norwich." Don't know if this is the bible mentioned in Simeon's will. I did check Simon Gates in the 1840 US Census in Norwich. He has 2 boys 14<20, 1 girl 5<10, 1 girl 10<15, 3 girls 15<20, plus he and his wife. In 1850 he has Mahitta, Juliet 24, George 21, Almira 19. A quick look at ancestry trees, folks only list Juliet and George as children, thus there are quite a few of his offspring unaccounted for including girls of age of your Rachel. In 1840, he lives a few household from James McNitt (probably his brother-in-law) and there are also some Rathbone's (Squire and Daniel) which may be relatives. Also interesting on the next page of the 1840 census are Justin Graves and Albert Tiffany who are NEIGHBORS of your Elijah and Antonette Smith in 1850 in North Norwich.... Sounds suspicious!! So can't confirm anything for you, but my bets are that my Almeda and your Rachel could very well be 1st cousins. Rachel's parents might be Simon and Mahitta... What do you think?? Looks like the wills of Simeon Jr (Simon) and Aaron Gates exist and could be ordered through www.sampub.com if you were interested. 3. My mother and my maternal grandmother spent years researching their ancestors. I've done nothing more than connect a branch to a tree. Below is a short summary of their work. What follows are the wives and mothers of my mother's side of the family. Three sons and a daughter of Oliver Dyer and Patience Sweet removed from RI and settled in New Berlin between 1800 and 1820. Jeremiah left by 1812 first to Jefferson Co and then to Niagara County, NY. Arthur removed around 1830 or so to Hornellsville, Steuben Co, NY. Nehemiah remained in New Berlin. Four generations of his descendents called New Berlin home. Celinda married Isaac Phillips and they also settled in New Berlin with family residing there for many generations. Oliver, Patience, Nehemiah, and Celinda are all buried in the Dyer Cemetery in New Berlin. Jeremiah is buried in the Cold Springs Cemetery in Lockport, Niagara Co, and Arthur is buried in the Hornellsville Cemetery, Hornellsville, Steuben Co., NY.
