    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath
    3. ANNOUNCING NEW DATABASE VOL. VI & VII - MARRIAGE INDEX RENSSELAER COUNTY, NEW YORK JANUARY 1924 - AUGUST 1927 A. Volume VI and VII of the ten volume set of Rensselaer County Marriages with their 8,014 names, has now been added to the Troy Irish Genealogy website. You can view these marriage records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nytigs/ and click on TIGS PROJECTS. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. B. Researchers having relatives with a RENSSELAER COUNTY, NY area connection, will be interested in these on-line, name searchable, records of 40,014 names of individuals who were married in Rensselaer County, New York. If you live in a nearby county or even further away, you might want to check out these names. Take a look at the data base, you never know what you will find. You may even find an earlier marriage for your relative that you never knew about. C. The TIGS website has a PRINTABLE FORM that can be used to request copies of the marriage documents from the Rensselaer County Clerk's Office. Mailing instructions and fees (only $5.00) are on the request form. There are SEPARATE request forms for EACH volume. Some of the items on the available documents will be: 1. Name, address, occupation, age, and place of birth of bride and groom. 2. If marriage for each is first, or second. If second, was first ended by death or divorce and when. 3. Names of parents of bride and groom, including maiden name of females, and country/state of birth. 4. Names of witnesses to wedding. 5. Date and place of wedding and name of clergyman, minister, rabbi, etc. 6. Race of bride and groom. Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY

    3. Looking for a MARY BECKWITH who is said to have gone to that County after 1890. She was born about 1869 to Nancy Bercier in Crogan, Lewis Co., NY. Mary was adopted by a Smith family and prior to 1889 married Will Beckwith orinally from Canada. They had a daughter, Maude, born in Camden, Oneida Co. NY 25 Jan 1889. For an unknown reason the marriage to Beckwith terminated and she left Camden and went to Chenango County. Maude's obit said Mary, her mother, died when Maude was a small child but no other details were given. Mary is my Brickwall. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim Stowell" <tstowell@chattanooga.net> To: <nychenan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 30, 2007 10:03 PM Subject: Re: [NYCHENAN] Chenango County Brickwalls > You can send such to me - please use the subject line - Chenango > Brickwall so I can pull it to my seperate Brickwall mailbox. > > Tim > > At 10:17 AM 12/30/2007, you wrote: >>I would also like to add some information to the brick wall. >> >>What email address should we send it to? >> >>Thanks >>Nancy Barton Bowers >>ptbelair@yahoo.com > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > NYCHENAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Wheeler, Biographical Sketch, History of the 114th Regiment, Civil War Captain Hiram S. Wheeler The son of Sylvester and Annie Wheeler, the subject of this sketch, was born in Otselic, New York, April 25th, 1835. He passed his boyhood in his native town, and, manifesting a natural aptness for mechanics, learned the trade of a tinner. He later embarked in the hardware business in South Otselic, doing a prosperous business. At the breaking out of the war, he held a commission as First Lieutenant in the Militia, and, on the organization of Company I, was chosen First Lieutenant of the same. On the acceptance of Captain Thompson, of the position of Quartermaster, he was commissioned Captain of his company, with muster, as such, from September 3, 1862. Captain Wheeler was almost constantly with his company, save when detached on Court Martial duty at the Headquarters of Dwight's Division. He participated in the battles of Port Hudson, Sabine Cross Roads, Pleasant Hill, Cane River, Mansura, and Cedar Creek. He had one brother and eight cousins in the service. He was ! always kind and obliging, and had many friends not only in his own regiment, but in the whole command. Since his retirement from service, he has resumed his business at South Otselic. >From the book - History of the 114th Regiment (Page 343 & 344), New York State Volunteers: containing a perfect record of its services, embracing all its marches, campaigns, battles, sieges and sea-voyages, with a biographical sketch of each officer, and a complete register of the regiment, wherein appears the name of every officer and enlisted man who has ever belonged to the same, with full remarks relating thereto, and several illustrations, by Elias P Pellet, Publisher: Bainbridge, N.Y., Pub., 1995. 06 Aug 1862 First Assembled in Norwich, NY 02 Sep 1862 First official Muster in Norwich, NY (sworn into service) 06 Sep 1862 Marched through streets of Norwich en-route to canal boats for transit to Binghamton (then on to Washington) 19 Jun 1865 Arrived home (from Civil War) in Norwich, NY Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RichardWheeler599 Surnames: Wheeler, Finney Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.chenango/1307/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Death of Captain Hiram S. Wheeler, obituary from Chenango Semi-Weekly Telegraph, Norwich, NY, Friday, June 4, 1886 On Wednesday evening, at his home in South Otselic, Captain Hiram S. Wheeler, of the 114th Regiment, after a lingering and painful illness quietly passed away. Captain Wheeler was a native of Otselic, born 25 April 1835. He was a son of Deacon Sylvester and Annie Wheeler and was reared under those influences, which begat in him in early life habits of industry, temperance and frugality which laid the foundation for a useful and prosperous career. For many years he was a hardware merchant at South Otselic, till obliged to abandon his chosen avocation by the inroads of disease and disabilities incident to the same. When the 114th Regiment was recruited, Captain Wheeler with J. Floyd Thompson and others was actively engaged in enlisting men to form a company, and so vigorously was the work prosecuted that in the brief period of nine days, from August 4th to August 13th, 1862, the requisite number was obtained, and the following day mustered by Adjutant Per Lee. Mr. Wheeler was chosen first lieutenant of the company, but he was commissioned captain and mustered as such, September 3, 1862, a few days before the regiment left its rendezvous at Norwich, Captain Thompson having been advanced to the position of quartermaster. Captain Wheeler was generally on duty with his company, except a short time when detailed to serve on court martial at division headquarters, and was generally liked by his men for whose comfort he ever had a special regard. He participated in the battle of Fort Bisland, the siege of Port Hudson, the battle of Sabine Cross roads, Pleasant Hill, Cane River, Mansura and! Cedar Creek. He was several times hit with missiles, but at the time he was not supposed to be seriously injured. An injury to the shoulder (battle of Cedar Creek), however, gave him considerable trouble and it is believed that the nervous prostration and spinal difficulties from which he has been a great sufferer for some years is largely if not wholly due to that cause. Captain Wheeler leaves a devoted wife (Flora M. "Finney" Wheeler), a dutiful son (DeVer Carter Wheeler) and a large circle of friends to mourn his loss. A loving husband and affectionate parent, a worthy citizen and honored soldier has been called to receive his reward. His funeral took place Friday afternoon, from his late residence. 3. I don't have a definitive connection but can offer this family as a potential match... 1. Daniel Ellis was born in 1802 in Slab City, NY. He died on 5 Nov 1857 in NY. The 1850 census shows 3 boys and 2 girls named: Lennird, Orlando, Lorenzo, Louise and Harriet. But, the www.rootsweb.com/~nyhchs/familysketches shows 4 boys and 1 girl named: Orrin, Alanson, Orlando, LeRoy, Lorenzo and Louisa. I have combined them here but one is likely incorrect. Daniel married Sally Coy daughter of Comfort Coy and Sarah Burdette. Sally was born in 1806 in Sherburne, NY. She died in 1874 in Oneida County, NY. They had the following children: 2 M i. Orrin Ellis . 3 M ii. Alanson Ellis . 4 M iii. Orlando Ellis was born in 1833. 5 M iv. LeRoy Ellis . 6 M v. Lorenzo Ellis was born in 1836. 7 F vi. Louisa Ellis was born in 1842. 8 M vii. Leonard Ellis was born in 1829. 9 F viii. Harriet Ellis was born in 1843. ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <NYCHENAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 30, 2008 8:41 AM Subject: [NYCHENAN] ELLIS in New Berlin in 1910 per US Federal Census > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: ckear1971 > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.chenango/1306/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I'm looking for any information on Roswell (C or P) Ellis born circa 1876 > in New York that married Lena Mae Cheeseborough (spelling?) born circa > 1882 in New York that lived in New Berlin during the 1910 US Federal > Census. 3. All, There is currently an online auction for some fascinating South Carolina slave letters that relate to Chenango County. There are two letters from South Carolina written by a person named Cal to Maggie HAGAMAN, of Chenango Forks, New York, in 1857. The content may be offensive to some. I am unrelated to this sale but thought it may be of interest to someone on the list. The link for the auction is: http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/5588940?from=alert Neil

These also have folks from Madison / Chenango counties mentioned from time to time, so don't discount these. I'm working on some odds and ends for 1886-1887 after I get deaths for 1887-1888 and marriages for 1888 on line. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As of this evening there are these numbers of subscribers: Chenango - 219 Cortland - 173 Madison - 223 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's been a busy summer, the new school year is starting off in a tailspin. For those who've asked about my daughter, most folks are amazed at how quickly English has come for her. It came much faster for her than Chinese was for me. She was also learning Spanish in the last two months of school last year and chatters away in it as well, although for the most part she might as well be speaking Chinese for all we know what she is saying. She's picked up American stuff and I suppose young people stuff too - I've only heard and seen a gazillion times High School Musical one and two with her begging for three when it comes out this fall. Then there's Camp Rock - and we now have a true generation gap... This summer she was in a camp sponsored at a local church that was celebrating its 50th year of doing so, learned to swim, meet other children outside of her school, learn songs and 10 weeks in participated in the musical at the end of the camp. Also near the end we got to go to the ER as she split open her chin on the pool deck. It took 4 adults to hold her down so the doctor could put the stitches in, even with the 'calming' stuff they'd already given her. A couple of weeks ago she started 3rd grade but is learning to read English with the 1st graders. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now for question time - I ran across a book a couple of weeks ago that I believe was written in the late 1950s, wherein it described remaining covered bridges in New York state. As I recall most seemed to be down Catskills way or up along the Hudson. I'm curious to know if anyone remembers any covered bridges in Chenango, Cortland or Madison counties? I have to think there surely were some, but don't ever recall any myself, but then again my experience in the area is limited. Tim

Bacon, believe maiden name was Reese. The following is an article discovered online re Mrs. Anna R. Bacon:http://herkimer.nygenweb.net/history/camden3.html "October 14, 1875: Mrs. Anna R. Bacon died recently at Sherburne at the age of 102. She was at the head of a family known as the Reese family, and she could count her descendants by hundreds. (Ed. Note: thought this might be the Reese family who was in some accounts at Andrustown during the 1778 massacre.)" Any information will be appreciated. Thank you.
