Hi Charlie I am curious about your Root family from MA to Chenango Co. Do you happen to know if any of them married into the Parker family? My ancestor John Parker b abt 1775 in either MA or RI married a woman named Mary (last name unknown) and they first appear in Chenango Co. abt 1799. The reason for the question is the name Edward LaVerne. There are several of them in my family and I am trying to break through a brick wall here. If he was in the Conectivut troops he did not receive a grant in the Military Tract in New York State. They were issued only to NYS troops. See "The Balloting Book." Many of the men that did receive lots did not settle on them and sold or traded them to other family members, friends and neighbors. Many were scooped up by land speculators and resold at bargain prices. some were just out right stolen by squatters. The Philley family received their land in Chenango county NY because Remembrance Philley was a soldier from Connecticut in the Revolutionary War. I have the date and many records of his wife's letters after his death, but they are not hat my fingertips! Those records can be found in the FHL in Salt Lake City. Does anyone know where Reuben Smith who received land on the authority of acts of the Leislature May 1786 and March 20 1788 came from or who he is related to. We have a Reuben Smith in our family but ours is much too young to be this Reuben. This particular one is listed in the Co of Montgomery in the township of Clinton (??). and that I assume later became part of Chenango Co. This Lot 58 was approved by the commisions of the land office January 12 1789 and recorded Nov. 12 1885. In addition to Reuben Smith receiving land from New York, the following Smiths also received land: Melaneton Smith, Seth Smith, Israel Smith, and William S. Smith. Does anyone know anything about these people and why they could receive land from NY. Yes, it is great! I was there in Sept. If anyone is headed that way it is worth a stop. If you can go back at night you can see their outside decor when the lights are all on. Also if you are up to a walk across the parking area the Silent Night Chapel is nice but small! Also lots of neat shops in the downtown area. Even the hotels look Bavarian and the staff at ours were wearing Bavarian clothing. There was an outlet mall near by (did not go there). And a very quaint mall near the downton area. By the time 2nd grade ended here, two months after our return, our daughter was chattering along in English and Spanish. For me Chinese was somewhat like learning Greek, although I found Greek harder. One has to learn the symbols, the Pinyin which is a phonetic spelling of what the symbol is pronounced as, and the dreaded tones. Context is everything. One word spelled the same in Pinyin with the same tone can have 40 different meanings depending on its use. Our daughter was having trouble telling the difference between he and she because in Chinese they are spelled and pronounced exactly the same, while the character is slightly different. Being in my 50s and having had a burst ear drum in the last few years, I was not as able as my 7th grader counterparts in hearing the fine difference between the tones. There are first, second, third, fourth tones, a neutral tone and the one the boys coined - the stupid tone! The word - ba depending on tone can mean - eight, to pull out, target, dad. Their sentence structure is different than ours so one feels like one is speaking in broken English. They do not use verb tenses as we do. A character can be translated as a phrase or it may take more than one character to create a word. From a genealogy standpoint it gets quite interesting as well: We would have grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces and we might say which side of the family they come from. There are Chinese words for these individuals - grandfather, grandmother, father's elder brother, father's younger brother, wife of father's elder brother, wife of father's younger brother, father's sister, husband of father's sister, brother's son, brother's daughter, sister-in-law, and about 8 words for cousins. This cover's just the father's side, for there are an equal number, but different words for relatives on the mother's side. Tim Stowell Chattanooga, TN Give me ambiguity or give me something else
They were counted as inmates. They would have a list and that word would sometimes take up the whole page, written sideways. The death records I have from my grandparents, great grandparents, etc., had grown children or the daughter's in law listed as being there as the informant. Family stories tell of who stayed with who to help out. My family lived right in New Berlin so there wasn't much traveling to do to help out. Be nice to your children. They are the ones that pick out your nursing home....... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Timothy Stowell" <tstowell@chattanooga.net> To: <nychenan@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 08, 2008 1:12 AM Subject: [NYCHENAN] other thoughts >I spoke with my remaining first cousin in Norwich Sunday night.
