    1. [NYCHENAN] Glass negatives
    2. Timothy Stowell
    3. This note is three fold in purpose - One to let you know I'm still around, albeit very tired, what with work, child and parents to care for. I'm feeling somewhat of a break in the clouds so hopefully can begin once again to put data on-line. The query system is still broken as Rootsweb seems to have a higher number of days with problems than in the last year or so. I'm looking at alternatives. Two to pass along a notice of some spectacular glass negatives on eBay for the New Berlin area: I don't know if you have an eBay account, but if you do - Item number: 300287045164 - Hotel (which I think stood on the northwest corner of the main intersection in New Berlin) Item number: 300287095438 - Silk Mill (which I think was/is on Green Street) Item number: 300287097080 - feed store (I'm guessing down by the railroad, near the river) Lastly, to ask if any one has experience scanning glass negatives? Trust you all have a wonderful year. Tim

    3. Clark Hiram Sponable On Ebay - Item number: 320332225740 is for a picture of this gentleman around 1 year old. He apparently was from Brookfield but now lies buried in St. Andrews cemetery in New Berlin, according to the blurb with the picture. This is not a surname I'm familiar with. Tim

    1. [NYCHENAN] Need Help - Some roadblocks
    2. johnstark
    3. Hello everyone, My grandmother Grace Lillian (Merrell) Thorne was born in Chenago Co. and I have had one major roadblock after another on a couple individuals and families. #1: Dimon Roberts, son of Russell Roberts b:21 Aug. 1817 (in W Springfield Ma.) & Elizabeth Harrington b: 12 Jul 1826 (in Oxford). Dimon was born 1 Nov. 1866 in Greene. From what my grandmother had said Dimon was a teacher at one of the county schools, possibly Greene where she went, as it was he who got her interested in becoming a teacher. She left the the county and ultimately married in Detroit, Mi. and then moved to Owosso, Mi where she taught until the 1960's Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance! John Stark

    1. Re: [NYCHENAN] named for? REPLY
    2. Hi Tim It appears that this explanation appears in more than one history book. It is in "History of Chenango & Madison Counties NY" by James H Smith, 1880 where it states "It was suggested by a Member of Legislature in consideration that the Settlers sang the tune at their Meetings. It also appears in the Gazetteer and Business Directory of Chenago Co. 1869-70 by Child, where it states the following: "From consideration that the Settlers were accustomed to singing the tune of Sherburne at their Meetings" Their were 11 early Settlers around 1792-93 and their names were as follows: Nathaniel Gray, Necombe Raymond, Elijah Gray, Eleazer Lathrop, Josiah Lathrop, James Raymond, Joel Hatch, John Gray Jr., Abraham Raymond, Timothy Hatch, Cornelius Clark. All settlers migrated to Sherburne from Duanesburgh where they were unable to purchase the land they had settled on in Duanesburgh and it indicates they were all originally from CT. In the Gazeteer it states that the 1st Town Meeting was held at the home of Timothy Hatch on the 1st Tuesday of April 1795 (By this time the number of Settlerers had grown to 20). It appears that this Meeting was after the Town was formed from Town of Paris in March 1795. However settlement was prior to that and some settlement was also prior to their Certificate of Purchase from William Smith in April 1793. It is very possible prior Meetings among these Settlers were held during their settling and prior to this April 1795 Meeting. These books do give us 2 secondary sources and it does supply the date the town was named. It's always possible there is a Primary Source existing to confirm this information on the naming of Sherburne. One could check at the Chenango County Court House for old County Meeting Records on the formation of the Town of Sherburne and if not available one could review Chanango County Records on Sherburne at the NYS Archives. Bottom line is that no other explanation appears. Pat R

    1. [NYCHENAN] named for?
    2. Timothy Stowell
    3. In one history on the origins of why Sherburne is called Sherburne, there was the blurb that folks in the area were in the habit of singing the tune or song Sherburne and thus the name. Does anyone else have thoughts on knowledge regarding how Sherburne got its name? Tim

    1. [NYCHENAN] Reuben SMITH, Otsego. NY early 1800s
    2. Kathy (GenealogyOuzzles@aol.com) and Suzanne (Sschardebeck@aol.com) recently wrote about three Reuben SMITHs: one the son of Aaron Smith, who lived in Middlefield, Otsego, NY in the early 1800s, had several children, including William and George Fennimore, and died Jan. 23, 1846, one who received land on the authority of acts of the Legislature May 1786 and March 20 1788, and one who is listed as owning land in Montgomery County, Clinton Township, approved by the commisions of the land office January 12 1789 and recorded Nov. 12 1885. Other Smiths receiving land from New York were Melaneton, Seth, Israel and William. Is it possible any if them was related to Esther SMITH who became the third wife of Joseph HARRIS 17 March 1799 and had two children: Smith, born 22 Sep 1800 and James, b. 12 Mar 1802, d. 12 Mar 1820? Those are the only facts I know about Esther and her sons, included in family records compiled by one of Joseph's grandsons. What little we know of Joseph includes his first marriage in Beekman, Dutchess County, in 1784, his second marriage in 1795 and his death 7 Aug 1802. The last recorded residence I have for him is Plattsburgh, Clinton County, NY, according to the 1800 census. Of anyone has any clues about Esther SMITH - or any other facet of Joseph HARRIS' life, I would appreciate hearing from them. Joseph and his first wife, Mary NORTHRUP, are my ancestors. 1. Re: [NYCHENAN] Lots received from the People of the State of New York--Reuben...
    2. Hi Suzanne, I have a Reuben Smith but he would not be this Reuben. My Reuben lived in Middlefield, Otsego, NY and was in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census for Middlefield. I don't know much about him other than he is the son of Aaron Smith and was born sometime around 1788 and died Jan. 23, 1846. I don't know his wifes name but think they had about 9 children. The only names I have for the children are William and George Fennimore. Does this sound like anyone you have come across while doing your research for your Reuben Smith? If so I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks so much!! We have a Reuben Smith in our family but ours is much too young to be this Reuben. This particular one is listed in the Co of Montgomery in the township of Clinton (??). and that I assume later became part of Chenango Co. This Lot 58 was approved by the commisions of the land office January 12 1789 and recorded Nov. 12 1885. In addition to Reuben Smith receiving land from New York, the following Smiths also received land: Melaneton Smith, Seth Smith, Israel Smith, and William S. Smith. Does anyone know anything about these people and why they could receive land from NY. Suzanne Smith Hardebeck **************New year...new news. Be the first to know what is making headlines. 1. [NYCHENAN] New Year's Mystery - GLYNN, FRANKLIN, BOYDEN
    2. Neil Boyden Tanner
    3. All, First and foremost, happy new year! To start off 2009, I have recently uncovered a bit of a genealogical mystery and I am hopeful that someone on the list has ties to this family or could help me out. I have long assumed that my great grand aunt Ellen BOYDEN GLYNN was widowed and raising her son (Willis A. GLYNN) alone, that she then died and the boy was adopted by her sister and husband, and that Willis then died at 17. The evidence for this was that in the 1880 census for Plymouth, NY there was a listing for Ellen (but no husband) and her son (aged 1) living with her sister Mary BOYDEN and other siblings. By 1900 Ellen is no longer on any census, Willis A. Glynn does not appear on any census, but on a tombstone in East Pharsalia Cemetery next to Mary BOYDEN FRANKLIN and her husband is a stone for Willis A., adopted by Mary and Burdette FRANKLIN, aged 17 dated November 17, 1895. The natural assumption from all of this was that Mary adopted her nephew (with whom she was already living) on her sister's death and that he died at 17. You can imagine my surprise when a few weeks ago I came across an obituary for William Anderson GLYNN, son of Ellen BOYDEN and Charles GLYNN of Plymouth, NY -- and he died in 1944! From my research, I believe that this is the "Willis A. Glynn" from the 1880 census and that the "Willis A." on the tombstone was a completely different person who happened to have the same first two names. Another theory is that there were two children but that one was born just after the 1880 census was taken, and that one was "Willis" and the other "William". The former passed away and the latter lived to adulthood. Anyway, clearly more research is needed to try and pin this down, but in connection with that I was curious if anyone had ties to this family: Charles A. GLYNN was born in Oct 1855 in New York to Charlotte and Anderson GLYNN. He died between 1900 and 1944. Charles married Ellen BOYDEN daughter of Bradford A. BOYDEN and Maryette BRUCE. Ellen was born on 11 Aug 1859 in New York. She died between 1880 and 1900. They had William Anderson GLYNN who was born on 25 Jul 1877. He died on 17 May 1944 in Norwich, PA. He was buried on 20 May 1944 in Cook's Falls, NY. William was employed as Railroad Forman in 1910 in Norwich, NY. William first married Maud E. [surname unknown] in 1898. They were divorced before 1910. Maud was born in Dec 1879 in New York to a New York mother and Irish father. Maud and William had two children, one who was unknown and likely died as a baby and Melville J. GLYNN. Melville was born on 7 Nov 1898 in New York. He died in Jul 1965 in California. Melville was employed as a "Train Man" in 1920 in Oneonta, NY. According to a newspaper article, he was a member of the National Guard based in Oneonta, NY. Melville married Ruth [surname unknown] . Ruth was born in 1902 in New York. In addition to his marriage to Maud whom he divorced, William later married Viola COOK in 1912. Viola was born in 1876 in New York. That is all I have uncovered so far on this family. I'm hoping someone can help me with this New Year's mystery! Best, Neil
