I know exactly the book you mean--it is typewritten on the old onion skin paper and bound in a good book. Wish I did not live in Florida as I would gladly help. Try writing the library and ask them to look in that book for whomever you are searching for. I found family in there, and I wasn't even looking for them !!! Who are you searching for if I may ask? NY, Vol. 1-2. What a mess that was. It was a film of a typescript volume the official title as follows: Volume 46 of New York State Series Cemetery, Church & Town Records, by the D.A.R. property of Guernsey Memorial Library, Norwich, NY. Presented to the library by the Captain John Harris Chapter, D.A.R. 1933. The pages were typed on what must have been very thin paper, as each page had the ink leached into it from the page previous and the page after. If there was a clear spot on a page I could sort of read bits from the next page but in most cases not at all. Sometimes the clearest image was on the filmed back side of a page which had a backwards image of the page before. Reading backwards is not easy either. So I guess my question is does anybody know if I can get this information elsewhere? Wheeler Another Soldier's Grave to be decorated on Memorial Day. Jerome Ferdinand Wheeler, one of the old residences of this section of Central New York, died at his home, 168 Port Watson St. at 12:30 o'clock this morning after a very brief illness from pneumonia. Mr. Wheeler, who was 81 years of age, was taken ill while attending the Memorial day exercises in the Cortland theater three years ago, and had been in rather poor health ever since. He was taken with a chill late Tuesday afternoon and was at once cared for. He felt very comfortable yesterday and seemed to be improving until 5 o'clock when, without warning, his condition changed and he began to sink very rapidly, death ensuing shortly after midnight. Mr. Wheeler was born in Hamilton, N. Y., April 20, 1829, and spent all his life in Madison, Chenango and Cortland counties. He was married in Marion, Wayne Co., Jan. 1, 1854, to Miss Jane C. Burdwin, who died August. 30, 1888. He enlisted in Company I, 114th Regiment, N. Y. S. Vols. In Norwich in 1891 and served four years, re-enlisting when his first term expired. A younger brother (Hiram S. Wheeler) was captain of his company. The regiment was in the Army of the Potomac most of the time, but was with Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley in 1884. It was actively engaged in the battle of Cedar Creek in which battle Mr. Wheeler had a thumb shot off. While on his way to the rear to have the wound dressed he met Sheridan on his famous fide from Winchester. His splendid black horse was reeking with sweat and flecked with foam. The site of the determined little rider hurrying to direct his retreating army made an impression upon Mr. Wheeler which he never forgot and he was v! ery fond of repeating the experience. Mr. Wheeler resided in Madison County for some years after the close of the war and was for five years keeper of the Madison County almshouse. He came to Cortland County 29 years ago and was for two years keeper of the almshouse in this county. He has made Cortland his home for 27 years. He was janitor for fifteen years of the Pomeroy Street school house and reluctantly resigned the position when his health failed. He took a great interest in G. A. R. affairs (Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army who had served in the American Civil War) and was a prominent member of Grover Post No. 98, and a past commander of the post. He was one of the oldest Masons in the county, having become identified with the lodge at South Otselic (Chenango County) more than fifty years ago. He was transferred to Cortlandville lodge, No. 470, when he came to this county. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist church and was inter! ested in all church work. He is survived by one son, R. H. Wheeler of this city, a daughter, Mrs. H. J. Baker, also of Cortland and one brother, Wakeman S. Wheeler of Eaton, Madison County. The funeral will be held from his late home tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock and will be in charge of his G. A. R. comrades. The remains will be taken Saturday morning to Eaton, where the funeral will be held a 4 o'clock p. m. Interment will be mate at Eaton. End of Obituary. Authors notes: Jerome F. He was born March 8th, 1801, consequently was nearly eighty years of age. He came to the town of Otselic fifty one years ago, and with his family shared the privations and hardships of those early days. His life and character were much like those of Deacon Benson Wheeler, who recently died in Pharsalia. He took a strong interest in the political affair if the country. Re: latest snow in CNY Has anybody mentioned the snowstorm on Mothers Day 1996? In my journal I wrote: "Sunday May 12, 1996 Snowing when I got up this morning. Snowing and sticking on the grass and trees! By late this afternoon the 2 or 3 inches of snow were gone, though." It also snowed on Miner Hill in South Otselic on May 4, 1984, the day after I moved back to CNY from Florida. Almost made me turn the U-Haul around and go back! _________________________________________________________________ Rediscover Hotmail®: Now available on your iPhone or BlackBerry http://windowslive.com/RediscoverHotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_HM_Rediscover_Mobile1_042009
Hi, Dorothy, Gee, are you related? There was a Dorothy Sisson in the tree, also. But to your question... I cant be sure of any date for Helen Mcadams. She may have been born in 1923, but it could be later. Here is what I have. Her mother Lydia was born in 1906 in Freedom Plains, Dutchess Co., NY. I think Lydia married a Brower and a Brown, but I dont know which was first. Lydia died in 1971. Her sister Dorothy probably died in 1972 in NY. Lydia's obit included Helen L. Mcadams in New Berlin, NY. Three children listed with Lydia are Donald D., Walter J., and Helen L. Helen married a H. William or William H. McAdams (1923 - 1997), if I have the correct Social Security Record for his death in New Berlin, NY where they lived. Apparently they also had property in Venice, FL, Ft. Myers, FL and Oneonta county, NY (includes New Berlin). This according to search services. They also list her middle initial as "B". So, it would fit were she born in the early 20s to mid-30s. People Search listed her age as 82, but I don't know when this was. And none of the phone numbers listed are valid for her. William's age was the same, though he apparently didn't live to be 82. I would guess her primary home was New Berlin, NY. But they spent time in Florida. The only two McAdams' in the same county as New Berlin didn't know of her when I called them. She could have died in either place, but does not appear on the Social security Register as I would expect had she done so. I'm hoping someone can send me an obit for her husband, but I've heard nothing yet. Her brother Walter J apparently went to Clarksville, TN and died there in 1997. He was born in 1930 (according to Social Security). A phone listing in his name was answered but the person answering the phone there said he wasn't there anymore without offering further explanation. I'm trying to locate her brother Donald D. or his children; no luck so far. I'll keep you posted if I learn anything more. -----Original Message----- From: nychenan-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nychenan-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of dorothy baker Sent: Monday, April 13, 2009 4:41 AM To: nychenan@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYCHENAN] Helen Mcadams, searching for Do you happen to know her date of birth, or approximate year? I remember either early May 1976 or '77 while I was at SUNY Morrisville snow falling in the morning. It was also the same year that I went to Old Forge to visit a cousin a month later and it snowed a couple of inches overnight at his cabin. Knew right there and then, after a couple of duty stations in tropical climates in the Army, that I should have never come back to Central NY during the winter. I have made it a habit, over the last 30 years, of not going any farther north than Dallas, Texas between Thanksgiving and Easter, except for weddings and funerals. It is a pleasure to visit Central NY and the Finger Lakes during late July and August when it's too dang hot for man or beast down here. As well as to find shelter from a hurricane or two. I always advise all my Upstate friends and relatives not to visit us here in Houston during the summer, but anytime after New Year's or Valentine's Day up to Memorial Day they are more than welcome. Here's hoping that Central New York has a wonderful Spring and Summer. About May 3, 1945 we had snow in the Town of Barker, Broome County, NY. We had just moved the previous day to the big house on farm my parents had just purchased from Lester Brewer. We had lived on the farm since Feb. 1939, Dad working the farm on shares. We woke up that May morning to see several inches of snow on the ground and trees. It quickly melted. That is the latest I can remember snow in spring. It's frosty but sunny here in Broome County today. Chris

I live in Louisiana and the last two nights it has been darn right cold. We were in summer (no spring here) and then all of a sudden we got hit with cold winds. Tim, One Mother's Day weekend - it would have been 1977 or 1978 - I spent Sun. sunbathing in my backyard in Chemung Co. in my bathing suit. I didn't hear any news or weather that day or evening or speak with anyone. (lived alone) Imagine my surprise when I woke up for work on Mon. morning to find close to 6 inches of snow on the ground. Herma
Hi Tim, I have to grin when I hear this - memory lane....., who would've thought they would be my memories <sigh> Yes, windy blustery day, snow has stayed on the ground most of the day today YUK, and it makes me hate being in NY especially since I have to go get my daughters girl scout troop in a little while and walk them to the church. The latest that I remember snow fall - memorial weekend in May, but I cannot tell you the year, and yes it was in my lifetime. This winter we got more snow than last year and last year we got more than in the year before, but not more than what we used to get when I was a kid. It seems as though we always had snow on the ground when I was a kid and now it comes and goes. I do remember one time driving with my dad to Utica - (I grew up in Bainbridge) and being amazed at the amount of snow there vs what we had, it was amazing, I think they had twice as much. This was in the 70 s. I'm going to answer your last question even though I'm not that old - do I think that the people today are wimps - yes. But in a way I can probably count myself as one of them. When we don't have as much snow for awhile you don't get used to driving in it, so you get wimpy about it. Same thing goes for shoveling etc. As for the cold, yes, I'm a wimp, I am getting older and I'm getting to the point where I would like to move where it's warmer more often Rene' -------Original Message------- From: Tim Stowell Date: 4/7/2009 12:53:08 PM To: nychenan@rootsweb.com; nycortla@rootsweb.com; nymadiso@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYCHENAN] Spring? Tim, Well, it was in western, not central, New York but I remember one time probably in the early 'fities, when we had a few flakes in the air in Batavia on May 1st. Well, I don't remember what year it was, but I certainly know that it was April. (early 80's, I think) I lived in Homer and worked in Syracuse. We had a blizard. The boss let us out early but we still had a hard time getting home. They closed 81. I also remember as a teenager.......walking on the top of the snow banks and touching the telephone wires. Tim I can recall in the mid 40's at least two Easter Sunday, all dressed up in my finest new Easter clothes, freezing in the cold and wearing my new patent leather shoes in the snow. The dogwood trees, lilacs are all in bloom. Today we have rather extensive snow flurries! It is a blustery day. This is the latest I've ever seen snow here. On the front end of winter, my grandfather told us many years ago that most years snow fell before his birthday, October 19th. I'm wondering two things - - the latest snow has fallen in central New York - in your lifetime - how this winter compares snow wise to previous years Ok, one more thing for those older members, are folks today wimps compared to what you had to go through dealing with the snowy weather? ------------------------------------------------------via webmail---- Tim Stowell tstowell@chattanooga.net ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NYCHENAN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Hi, I'm looking for Helen MCADAMS who is known to have lived in New Berlin, Chenango County, NY. She also had a winter home in Venice, Florida. I'm trying to contact her or her husband William. I believe we're distantly related and I would like to find at least one living descendent of Isaac Sisson (1828 - 1906) of Lithgow, Dutchess County, NY. They could also be in Oneonka, NY I hope someone can hook me up with her or her family. I'm retired and working on ancestry for my extended family. I live in Sonora, California, am married, with children and grandchildren. Thanks for your help. Ed Nissen, edjeanne@mlode.com
