    3. The spelling of Chautauqua varied quite a bit according to the "History of C hautauqua County" by Andrew Young. It wasn't until 1859 that the board of supervisors declared the correct spelling as Chautauqua. In 18 04 the Holland Land company maps listed it at Chautaughue. Given the timeframe, the Chateauqay spelling could be valid for either location. Chances of finding vital records in NYS prior to the 1900's is extremely slim. Most have to make do with secondary records and bible records. In the 1820's the area was still a major wilderness area.
