She was born in Somersetshire England. It was about 1850 when Mr and Mrs HAYES decided to come to America, with 10 children- no small undertaking. There was no railroad in Chautauqua Co, they came to Buffalo from NY by canal, then by boat to Milwaukee and settled on a farm in Wisconsin, staying there 3 yrs.times were hard; They came to Chautauqua CO by steamer, to Dunkirk, and located near Mayville. the next year in 1854 located to their pleasant home in Fredonia.
