Bowen, 89, of 2095 Hoag Road, died at 10:24 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 22, 2001) in WCA Hospital. An Ashville resident most of her life, she was born Feb. 10, 1912, in Jamestown, the daughter of John A. and Hilda Vern Peterson. She was a graduate of the former Lakewood High School where she was salutatorian of her graduating class. Before her retirement she was employed at the Ashville Post Office where she worked for 37 years. In earlier years she was employed by the former G.C. Murphy Company in Jamestown. She was a member of the Ashville United Methodist Church where she also taught Sunday school for several years and was a member of the Womens Society of Christian Service. She was also active with the P.T.A. of the former Ashville Elementary School and was active with the child study group and the mothers singers group in Ashville. In earlier years she was active with the Cub Scouts and the Girl Scouts in the Ashville area. She was a volunteer for t! he American Red Cross and was the chairman for the Fund Drive for the American Red Cross. She was also a member of the Home Extension Service of Chautauqua County She is survived by a son, Richard E. Bowen of Schenectady, N.Y.; a daughter, Janice B. Thompson of San Diego; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin B. Bowen, whom she married June 9, 1934, and who died Sept. 7, 1984; three sisters: Mildred Peterson, Esther Eckman, Lillian Penhollow; and a brother, Paul Peterson. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
