Wheeler, 96, of 6 Ivy St., Jamestown's oldest Spanish-American War veteran, died at 11:20 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 11, 1965) in WCA Hospital. Mr. Wheeler enlisted in the war in 1898 in Buffalo, was wounded and disabled in Cuba, and was discharged April 15, 1899 in Savannah, Ga. He was born Feb. 29, 1968, in Frewsburg, the son of Francis and Marian Wheeler. He was employed as a lumber inspector for many years at the Jamestown Lounge Co., and later as a machine operator at the Crawford Furniture Mfg. Corp., retiring 25 years ago. He was a member and past commander of Samuel M. Porter Camp, Spanish-American War Veterans; a member of V.F.W. Post 51; and an honorary member of Mr. Tabor Lodge, I.O.O.F. Surviving are two sons, Raymond F. Wheeler, Jamestown; and Elmer J. Wheeler, Bluefield, W. Va.; one daughter, Mrs. Blanche Nelson, Frewsburg; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Marian M. Foster, St. Petersburg, Fla. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Frewsburg.
