He was born March 20, 1939, in Jamestown, the son of the late Ronald Atkins and Maxine Case Destro. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Syracuse. Surviving are his wife, Tena McIntosh Clearistene Atkins; two sons: Leo Atkins Jr. of Erie and Patrick Atkins of Girard; two daughters: Brenda Barron of Schenectady, N.Y., and Rhonda Kellogg of Titusville, Pa.; four stepsons: James Minnis of Erie, Thomas and Michael Minnis of Lake Dallas, Texas, and Ricky Minnis of Denver; two stepdaughters: Lisa McKey and Lori Azcorra of Lawrenceburg, Tenn.; 28 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Suzanne Huddleson of Jamestown; and one brother, Carl R. Destro of Kennedy. Besides his father, who died July 2, 1967, and his mother, who died Aug. 22, 2000, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Atkins, in 1996. Burial was in t! he Greenwood Cemetery, Panama.
