Smith, 75, of R.D. 1, Ashville, a retired lieutenant of the Jamestown Police Dept., died at 6:15 a.m. Saturday (June 8, 1968) at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Rosemary S. Andrews of Pine Hill Road, Randolph where he had made his home for the past two years. He was born Nov. 30, 1892, in Buffalo, the son of George and Theresa Geiger Smith. Mr. Smith was a long-time employe of the City of Jamestown, serving with the fire department from 1920-22. He transferred to the police department, serving until his retirement in 1952. He graduated from Gowanda State Hospital School of Nursing in 1912. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Navy Seabees. He was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church of Lakewood; Loyal Order of Moose, John W. Tiffany Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars; and the Lakewood Memorial Post, American Legion. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Roenia M. Smith of Jamestown; three sons, George V. Smith, Longview, Tex., Gregory A. Smith and Dr. Leo F. Smith, both of Rochester; his daughter, Mrs. Andrews of Randolph; 21 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A son, Benedict A. Smith was killed in action in France in 1944 while serving with the U.S. Army during World War II. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, Randolph. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
