Welch, 71, died Friday (Nov. 21, 2003) at Lake Shore Hospital in Irving. Born in Silver Creek, N.Y. on Nov. 24, 1931, he was the son of the late Theodore and Sylvia (Woods) Welch. A 1949 graduate from Silver Creek High School, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from SUNY at Buffalo and a Masters Degree in Education at SUNY at Buffalo. A retired U.S. Army reserve, he had served in the reserves from 1952-1974, and retired as Major from the 365th Evacuation Hospital. He was last employed as the Director of Education and Training at the Gowanda Psychiatric Center. A member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Silver Creek, he also served as a Vestryman. He belonged to Silver Lodge #757 F&AM as well as the Lake Erie Bird Club and the Retired Officers Association. He was in the "Whose Who? in American College and Universities," in 1974 and also was an instructor in CPR and First Aid for the American Red Cross of Erie and Chautauqua Counties. Surviving are his wife Doris E. (Congdon) Welch, whom he married Jan. 25, 1954 in St. Alban's Church; two sons, Thomas Welch of Hindsdale, N.Y. and Dennis Welch of St. Paul, Minn.; one brother, Theodore Welch of Irving; and four grandchildren. Nieces and nephews also survive.
