Mrs. Schoener was born in Silver Creek, New York, on November 14, 1930 to Pauline and Merle Scott. In 1952 she married Frederic Schoener and shortly afterward settled in the home on Webster Road where she raised her family and spent most of the rest of her life. Once her children were well established in school, Mrs. Schoener began working as a secretary at S.U.N.Y. Fredonia, a career that spanned 26 years, from 1969 to 1995. She initially worked in the International Students Office, sparking a lifelong interest in people from other countries. She invited foreign students from the college for family dinners, picnics and weekend stays. When the college closed for holidays, Mrs. Schoener invited students who did not have a place to stay to spend holidays and summer vacations with the family. The Schoeners also hosted an AFS student from Vietnam for a year and chaperoned bus trips and other AFS activities. In all, more than 300 students from 60 nations visited her home over the years. Mrs. Schoener remained in close contact with a number of the students for her entire life. Mrs. Schoener was also the doyenne of the locally-known Portland Zoo. Intrigued by a collection of painted plywood animals left over from an art project at the college, she took them home and placed them around her lawn each spring with her husband's help. The collection became known as the Portland Zoo after passers-by began stopping to take pictures. Soon after her husband's death in 2000, she moved to Tennessee to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. She is survived by two daughters, Robin Schoener of Boston, MA and Melissa Mitchell of Brentwood, TN; one son, Rick Schoener of North East, PA; two sisters, Patricia Schrantz of Mount Airy, NC and Doris Thompson of Dunkirk, NY; and two brothers, Raymond Scott of Lakeview, NY and Douglas Scott of Naples, FL. She is also survived by grandchildren Katlyn, Zachary and Matthew Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Frederic Schoener, as well as her mother Pauline Scott and sister Susan Moekel of Fitchburg, MA. (Dunkirk Observer Obit)
