Shell -- Your question about the Halletts brought back a few memories for me. Many years ago, my first big assignment as a reporter for the Erie (PA) Morning News was covering Susan Hallett's trial. The boss sent me to Mayville because I was a Jamestown native. Although I didn't really know her, Susan had graduated two years ahead of me from Jamestown High School. I had forgotten many of the details, but found some in my old clippings. The murders occurred during the weekend of February 10, 1973. The victims were Robert Hallett, 49, a well-to-do businessman; his second wife, Grace Hallett, 39; and their 8-year old daughter Ann. All three were shot execution-style. Soon after, police charged Susan Hallett, 24, Robert's daughter by his first wife Alice; her boyfriend, Richard Parrish, 28; and a friend, Aaron Hale. All three lived in Detroit. The state argued that Susan had arranged a burglary at her father's home, and that Parrish actually shot all three family members. Hale claimed to have witnessed the slayings, and got a deal from the prosecution to testify against the other two. Susan and Richard claimed that Hale had done the shooting. Susan was convicted of felony murder (murder during the commission of another felony) and Richard of first-degree manslaughter. I'm not positive, but I vaguely recall hearing she had been released from prison. If there's something in particular you want to know about the case, let me know and I'll see what I can find. If you have access to the Jamestown Post-Journal, you'd find the crime stories beginning about Feb. 12 or 13, 1973, and the trial stories around Jan. 11, 1974. Sue Hurley Corbran
