John Whitcomb served in the Iowa 40th Inf he does not appear in the 1890 veterans census, John Whitcomb , Residence: Richland, Iowa Enlistment Date: 12 Aug 1862 Side Served: Union State Served: Iowa Service Record: Enlisted as a 2nd Corporal on 12 August 1862 at the age of 29. Enlisted in Company I, 40th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 10 Oct 1862. Promoted to Full 4th Sergeant on 12 Nov 1863. Mustered Out Company I, 40th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 2 Aug 1865 at Fort Gibson, CN.
