Unit and also found as CLEMONT Swart pensioned in Cattaraugus Co NY as Clemence Swart State Filed: New York Widow: Emily R. Swart nee CARD cannot read the date but he is living in 1900 Living in Harmony in 1860 father is same name age 45, born Germany, Roana is the mother NY 40, Clemens D 17, William 9, Charlotte 8, Harriet 6, Charles 3, Ellen 1 one CLEMENCE SWART is mentioned in Biographies of the early families of the town of Busti, Chautauqua County, New York Clemence SWART was born in Strausberg Germany when he was about 14, he ran away from home and became a stowaway on board ship for America. He was discovered by a Mr SULLIVAN who took him under his care on board this ship thus saving him the usual penalty of a stowaway. Clemence then worked for Mr Sullivan to pay his passage and he grew up in this Irish family and finally married Mr Sullivans daughter, Rowena they had a large family and lived in the town of Harmony and are buried in Blockville Union Cemetery SWART Clemens d 11/18/1892 aged 78 yrs 2 ds. SWART d 10/18/1850 aged 3yrs 10 mos 11 ds As near as I can find the above Clemence was b Germany about 1814 he is here in 1860 census as CLEMENS wife ROANA son OR in same house at least Clemens D 17** William 9, Charlotte 8, Harriet 6 Charles 3 and Helen 1, rather looks like Roana is maybe a 2nd wife there is a big gap in the kids or they are the dead ones Clemence D SWART served in the Civil War from NY widow Emily was pensioned at his death March 1915 He served in the NY 9th Engineers also the NY 15th NY engineers Clement D.
