Chabe, 81, of Fredonia died Tuesday (July 13, 2004) at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk following an extended illness. He was born Jan. 12, 1923 in Gary, Ind., the son of the late Michael and Barbara Chabe. Dr. Chabe served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946, receiving numerous medals and commendations.The valedictorian of Lew Wallace High School, Class of 1941, he also graduated from Michigan State University in 1948 with a bachelor of arts in history, and Indiana University in 1950 with a master of science in education. He received a doctorate in education from Indiana University in 1959 and in 1993 was awarded a master of arts in Russian from Norwich University. A Phi Beta Kappa honors graduate of Indiana University, he was listed in ''Who's Who in North America.'' He was the author of 13 books during the 1970s on education in foreign countries. A professional photographer, he owned the World Wide Photography Company, which created numerous educational filmstrips. A retired professor of education at Fredonia State University College, Dr. Chabe was the guest lecturer for the Distinguished Kasling Lecture Series. He also had been a gra! de school teacher, principal and superintendent for various schools. He served as the chief interpreter for the United States and USSR Culture Exchange Program at Chautauqua Institution. A distinguished traveler, he served as a liaison between American and Soviet educational institutes, visiting the Soviet Union 13 times. His memberships included the United University of College Professors, The Torch Club, Rotary Club and Lions Club. He also was the past chairman of the Education Department at Fredonia State. He was a specialist in antiques and antique refinishing, and enjoyed skiing. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Janice (Gilbert) Chabe, whom he married in 1951 in Gary; two sons, Daniel Chabe of Cleveland, Ohio, and David Chabe of Fredonia; a sister, Julia Levicki of Laguna Hill, Calif.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Chabe. Arrangements are by the Larson-Timko Funeral Home, Fredonia.
