Oviatt, 86, of 44 Royal Avenue, Jamestown, died at 1:25 p.m. Wednesday(March 16, 1977) in Jamestown General Hospital. Before retiring, she was employed in the office at Chautauqua Institution. Miss Oviatt was born in the Town of Harmony, August 24, 1890, the daughter of Judson and Celia Northrop Oviatt, residing in Jamestown the last 18 years. She was a member of the Hurlbut Memorial Church, Chautauqua, the American Association of Retired Persons, and the Marvin Community House. Surviving are a sister, Miss Retta M. Oviatt with whom she shared her home; nine grand-nieces and grandnephews including Mrs. Madelyn Olson and Miss Flora Stranigan of Jamestown, Allen Stranigan of Bemus Point, and Dr. Gale Stranigan of Lakewood, NY. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Franklin B. Laundry, retired pastor of Hurlbut Memorial Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Funeral Home. Obituary from Jamestown Post Journal July 25, 1983 Retta M. Oviatt, 89, of 44 Royal Avenue, Jamestown, NY, died at 2:15 p.m. Sunday(July 24, 1983) in Jamestown General Hospital. She ahd been employed as a teacher at Love School in the Jamestown Public School System for 45 years prior to her retirement. A Jamestown resident most of her life, she was born July 18, 1894, in Harmony, the daughter of Judson and Celia Northrop Oviatt. Miss Oviatt was a graduate of Fredonia Normal School and was a member of Hurlbut Memorial Church, Chautauqua, the Marvin Community House and the New York State Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are a nephew, George Stranigan of Jamestown, several grandnieces and grandnephews, including Flora Stranigan, Madelyn Olson and Marie Crosby all of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by two sisters; Fern and Rhea Oviatt and a brother, Fred Oviatt. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Lind Funeral Home, The REv. Norman C. McLean, pastor of Hurlbut Memorial Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. today in the funeral home.
