Loeb, 79, of Dunkirk died Sunday morning (May 22, 2005) at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk after a brief illness. He was born July 9, 1925 in Dunkirk, the son of the late Fred and Ruth (Ogle) Loeb. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Loeb served from 1943 to 1946. He served as the City of Dunkirk Fire Chief from 1960 to 1962 and again from 1970 to 1972. A writer for the Fire Chief Magazine, he also had been a fire instructor and fire photographer. He was a 59-year member of Dunkirk Hose Co. No. 1 and an honorary member of Professional Firefighters Local 616. His other memberships included the Sheridan United Methodist Church and the Dunkirk Historical Society. An avid jazz and Big Band Era enthusiast, his five granddaughters were especially important to him. Surviving are his wife, Sue (Rosel) Loeb, whom he married June 22, 1952; three sons, the Rev. Karl E. Loeb of Attica, Stewart P. Loeb of Monroe and Allen Loeb of Dunkirk; one brother, Fred Loeb of Cali! fornia; two sisters, Jean Knott of Sheridan and Arlene Heinrich of Derby; five granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Maxine Anson; and a nephew, Daniel F. Anson. Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home, Dunkirk.
