Sclafani Slate, 85, of Jefferson Street, formerly of Brocton, died Sunday (April 8, 2001) in Westfield Memorial Hospital. She was born March 1, 1916, in Brocton, the daughter of Mercurio and Carmela Nicosia Sclafani. A Westfield resident for 46 years, she was employed by the former Barmon Brothers Dress Factory and Westfield Sewing Factory for many years as a seamstress. She was a member of St. James Major Roman Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, the Women of the Moose Chapter 517 of Westfield, the Westfield Senior Citizens Club and the Home Bureau. She greatly loved her family, sewing, crocheting, reading and flowers. She is survived by her husband, Frank T. Slate Sr., whom she married Sept. 17, 1938; four sons: Frank T. Jr. and Timothy M. Slate, both of Fredonia, Donald M. Slate of Norfolk, Va., and Edward J. Slate of Westfield; three daughters: Virginia L. Slate of Van Buren, N.Y., Maryann V. Jeffries of T! oledo, Ohio, and Sandra R. Cunningham of Westfield; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Angeline Cardone of Lewiston, N.Y., and Ida Spallino of Niagara Falls; and a brother, Paul Cataldo of Virginia. Burial will be in Portland Evergreen Cemetery.
