So I called Dunkirk's city clerk, and they don't have a cert. for her. and I know I should call pomfret/fredonia/sheridan....but I hope the obit might provide for a better idea of who to call for the death cert. anyway...if someone could look up in the observer books for a death notice of Clara Wilbur died in 1940 in the area. A mention of the horse-drawn sidewalk plows usually brings forth a story or memory from someone who lived in Jamestown during the first six decades of the 20th century. here is the link to this total article, http://post-journal.com/page/content.detail/id/517735.html?nav=5004 no pix of horse here but one driver is named here The frame is oak, the sideboards are plywood and it was built to be used by a small horse. It was built in the city carpenter shop by Anton Anderson. The other heavy oak plows were built by A. Martin Danielson, who was the city carpenter for over 40 years. The city blacksmiths, who made and kept the steel work in repair, were Oscar ''Barney'' Peterson and later Oscar ''Stockfish'' Gustafson. They were the men responsible for making and maintaining these much used and necessary pieces of equipment. At one time, there were 32 routes within the city with three plows kept in reserve. One snow plow operator was Roger C. Anderson who began plowing at the age of 12. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Used to have skating on his ponds too. Then again, you may be referring to someone else... I remember the plows... also my Dad ran a route as a kid up on the south side.. He passed on the story that he would be awakened at 3:00am by the farmer (actually, my grandparents were awakened), and off he'd go to plow until 6:00am or so then off to school. Said he'd nearly fall asleep on heavy snow days. I do know he did not work for Hall but I'm unsure who he worked for. There was a piece a while back in the PJ about the old horse drawn plows. I just checked my volumes of Genealogical Information reported in the Dunkirk Observer 1925-1956 and no hits on those names. I also searched the online edition on ancestry.com and nothing with the orr/parker combination either. If they were married in or around Mayville or Jamestown, it may not have been recorded in the dunkirk papers. More likely the Jamestown Post which I haven't seen any electronic edition or extracts.
