I later learned from my older first cousins, the DALRYMPLEs, that he was called Robby. Merle's dad & my mother were brother and sister. Very few people outside of the family knew that my mother was adopted by the GOOTs in 1915, a very secretive affair apparently when my mom was only days old. My mother never realized that she was adopted until 1965 when her "mother" made a deathbed confession. The spelling of Chautauqua varied quite a bit according to the "History of C hautauqua County" by Andrew Young. It wasn't until 1859 that the board of supervisors declared the correct spelling as Chautauqua. In 18 04 the Holland Land company maps listed it at Chautaughue. Given the timeframe, the Chateauqay spelling could be valid for either location. Chances of finding vital records in NYS prior to the 1900's is extremely slim. Most have to make do with secondary records and bible records. In the 1820's the area was still a major wilderness area. Chateaugay is a town in Franklin county, WAAAAAY up in the Northeastern corner of NY state. Chautauqua County is WAAAAAY in the Southwestern corner of NY state. Which is it you are looking for?
