    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: km96 Surnames: Akin, Aken, Akins, Akens, Bratt, Alexander Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.chautauqua/21577/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Larry, I did not find Laura, but I located Ranson in Kiantone... I found Ranson Akin in the Chautauqua County Directory (1873-4) in Kiantone with Jamestown as a post office. He was a farmer with 68 acres on road 6. He also leased 74 acres of his farm land to a Edwin Akins, Jr. on road 4. There is an Erastus Akin & Alfred Aken near by. I have a copy of the maps here: http://kindredroots.com/Where/NY/chautauqua/chautco_maps.htm Joseph Akin (& family) was the original settler of Kiantone (Akinsville), on Stillwater Creek in 1807. He was from Rensselaer County. Ranson sold land to Nathan A. Alexander from Vermont. (History of Chautauqua Co & Its People, Andrew Young, 1875) "Mr. Akin built a bridge about 1814 on the Stillwater creek, and the first town meeting in Ellicott in 1813 was appointed at 'Joseph Akin's house at Stillwater.' He was an energetic, ambitious man. Several of his relatives located here and the name of Akin is borne by many of Kiantone's worthy citizens." (History of Chautauqua Co, Downs & Hedley, 1921) Joseph Akin from Rensselaer county came with his family in 1807 and located on lands on the Stillwater (now owned by the Russell heirs) near the west line of the town. He was the pioneer settler and was imbued with the plan of building up a town ('Akinsville') but the survey of the township into lots was not completed, and as he could not then obtain a clear title to the land, he could not sell property he did not possess. In 1814 the plan was abandoned. Laban Case however had rolled up a log tavern and a blacksmith shop. Mr. Akin built a bridge about 1814 on the Stillwater creek and the first town meeting in Ellicott in 1813 was appointed at "Joseph Akin's house at Stillwater." He was an energetic, ambitious man and possessed the characteristics of the true pioneer. Several of Mr. Akin's relatives located here, and the name Akin is borne by many of Kiantone's worthy citizens, one of whom is Ransom Akin. (History of Chautauqua Co, Obed Edson, 1894) Joseph Akin, a native of Pawling, N. Y.. came from Pittstown, N. Y.. in 1807, when the surveys on the Stillwater had just been made, and purchased by deed and settled on lot 29, where his son-in-law, Charles Russell, and grandson, John Howard Russell, now reside. James and Elijah Akin and other sons settled near their father on the Stillwater, lower down stream (Conquest of Chautauqua, A Anderson, 1932) Kelly Miller Kindred Roots Genealogical Society http://kindredroots.com Robert Akin wrote: > I am looking for the parentage of Laura Bratt who was born in Chautauqua abt 1825. 3. Thank you Larry, but I knew this (though someone on the list may not have known). I am trying to locate Gage's Gulf to visit it today (more like this summer). My Grandfather fondly remembers the place. He is unable to give me the road names because he doesn't remember the roads having names back them. He rattled off how to get there, but not being a native myself (or even in this area of the US), I could not connect. All he could say for sure was that it was in the northern region of South Ripley (his hometown). BTW: My Grandfather, Red Waite, is 86. He, as well as his mother & Grandfather (Hazel Bronson Waite & Wesley G. Bronson) were born in South Ripley. My Grandfather moved north to Buffalo as an adult, looking for work to support his growing family & remains there today. Does anyone out there know him, by chance? Author: CliffCobb Surnames: Cobb, Burnett Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.chautauqua/21574/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Dee, While trying to ferret out the different Cobb Families who started settling New York in the early 1800's, I came across a Septimus Cobb Living in Phelps, Ontario,NY., in the 1830 Census. I started tracking him and he apparently moved to Michigan around 1834, with a wife Caroline, they eventually had 9 children, the oldest two born in NY. Both Septimus and Caroline were listed on Census as being born in NY., with Septimus stating his parents were born in Ma. What got my attention was his living in Phelps. Phelps was an early "Taunton Cobb" settlement as opposed to the "Barnstable Cobbs" George Cobb, 1754-1837 settled there.(George4,William3,Morgan2,Augustine1). George had at least two known sons living in Phelps, Abner and George H.b. 1785,Ma.. George H. mar. Lydia Burnett, Dau. of Archibald Burnett brother of Priscilla Burnett wife of David Cobb, George4's brother. It seems quite possible that Septimus is a son of either Abner or George H.. While digging for verifica! tion, I came upon some information that you had done some work on Septimus Cobb. If so did you find out anything you could share? On a side note Priscilla Burnett's oldest sister, Sarah married a Thomas Love, moved to Chautauqua Co.,NY, where Thomas died 1815, in the Twn of Hanover. At least, these two names are listed as daughters of Ephraim EARL & Phebe Brown COVEY. The EARL family consisted of six children, all born in North East, Erie County, Pennsylvania. They are listed in the 1900 Census in the following order: Laura, Mary, Jessie, Hannah, Ephraim Jr., & Byron. No birth years for 1900 are provided in my "teaser version" of Ancestry.com. In subsequent Erie Co., PA census, only the sons are listed, Ephraim Jr. (ba.1895) is listed as single up to & including 1930. Byron (ba.1887) is listed as married in 1910 & 1920 with a son George B. (ba.1908). In 1920 two (adopted ?) daughters, Myrtle (ba.1896) & Gerda (ba.1899), their birth years make them too old to be the natural children of Byron & his wife Taisy / Carey B. (ba.1887).
