Oakley who died November 11, 1868, at age 22? He died in Buchanan County, Iowa. Buchanan County Bulletin and Guardian, November 13, 1868, page 3: "John J. Oakley was the leader of a group going to charvari Ed Snow and his new bride at her father's house. The crowd fired shots at the house. Mr. Oakes, whose home it was, went to the door and demanded that they leave. Soon after he took his gun and fired into the darkness. No more noise was heard. The next morning the sheriff arrested him for the murder of John Oakley. Mr. Oakley leaves a wife and one child." His probate file revealed that a year after his death his widow paid $55 for his tombstone to J.L. Fish of Jamestown, who appears to have been a stonecutter in the area according to census returns. His only child, a 6 month old son grew up, married and raised nine children. There are d! ozens of descendants of John J. Oakley. His wife, Harriet Amelia Clark, re-married and remained in Buchanan Co until her death in 1918.
