I hope that one day there will be a question that I have that you will be able to help me with. I also agree that depending on what and how you are researching you may find the "clutter" of the obits in the way. It appears that you are looking to help people and have your own research tools and therefore do not have a need for the obits on the boards. May I ask that you take it easy on us unexperienced researchers. Help us learn how to ask the right question. Direct us on how and where to find the right answer. It's people with experience such as yours that will, one day, help us help others. Cheers, Scott
those obits to all of us can be just the item we need to break down the brick wall that every family has.... keep them coming ... I for one am glad they are on-line and I say Thank You to the person or persons who put them on the list !!!! Mill

As a matter of fact I have found it very insightful and welcoming… As someone who grew up in Chautauqua County, I have found the obits of many family members and friends “randomly” posted. It has brought a lot of unsolicited and forgotten memories of people that I have not thought of for a very long time. I wish that a lot of the other county boards had people who did the same. It also tells me, as someone who is visiting the board that there are people out there who have the knowledge, ability, and time to help me find the information that I am looking for. The one item that is sometimes missing or forgotten is to properly classify the post. If the posting is an obituary, it should be classified as such. If it is a query, it should be classified as such. It does not take very long to figure out how to narrow the board to what you are looking for. So, IMHO, Dale, if you are only looking to help people you should just be able to look at queries. For the helpful folks posting all of the obits, if you remember to properly classify the bountiful number of obits, then when we are looking for them we can see them without all of the other information…. Everyone, keep up the great work and thanks for all of the time that you spend providing us with information on family and friends. IMHO, Scott

My lines spread far and wide, and with the "older folks" in the family gone, I often am clueless as to the names of various cousins and other relatives. This leaves me unable to proceed with research. But then, out of nowhere, I will find a "random obit" that might even come from the family my person married into, or some source like that, where I would not have had any clue to look, and that source will be just full of facts, names, etc. that open up many doors. I, for one, really appreciate these obituary postings and don't find them especially "random"!

First of all its free, which is a major thing. When you look at certain "other" sites concerning genealogy it is often a disapointment to find they charge a nominal fee for you to find information that, when you think about it, is rightfully yours to begin with. From the first time I posted here I've had great luck. Information on my maternal great grandmother was found for me, when I had no were to turn. Just last week I found a whole thread on my maternal great grandfathers lineage (on his mother side) by simply inputting his last name into the search box! Every little post with every little name helps. It makes the chances that people will find what they are looking for improve, and it saves a little time on the researchers part, if a person is able to find the information without submitting a query. I say keep it up and I have a question. Can I also add Obits from my own records on my family? I might be able to help someone out myself, and the would be awesome.

I was able to find the grave of my paternal grandmother. But when we tried to find the graves of my maternal great grandparents we weren't able to locate them. We went to the office and the guy found them in the database and circled them on the map, but we still couldn't find them. Not to mention we waited outside the door for nearly an hour because no one was in the office! It was the middle of the day on a weekday, someone should have been there. I hope you have better luck than I did.

It is inevitable! Everyone is encouraged to post their items to the message board so it may help others and prevent multiple look up requests on the same person/family. In turn, it is automatically sent to the mailing list along with emails sent only to the list. This adds up for everyone who subscribes. Personally speaking; I am a webmaster who offers free look ups along with my own research, research I do for others, & regular emails. I get hundreds of emails daily. Still, I have yet to see a group such as this message board/mailing list that is so helpful and accessible. I truly believe it is worth a few extra emails! The best way not to get flooded with emails is to either subscribe to the digest version of the mailing list or not subscribe to the list at all. Instead, search the message boards often. This board/mailing list has been around for some time now. The majority of helpers & viewers are extremely happy with the way it is run. I'm sure one (or more) grouchy human being will not prevent us from continuing to be such a wonderful and productive group! No matter what you do or where you go, you can't make everyone happy all of the time. All you can do is do your best (and I don't think posting complaints is the best a person can do)!

I have a different viewpoint on this, based on from my own personal perspective and many others' perspectives, since I coordinate a volunteer effort on a different board. Actually - posting so many obits increases the odds of many more people finding information about family members they would never think of making a request for. Most people aren't going to be making a request for obits of their 2675 favorite family members - and many can't specify a year or place of death to make a request in the first place. Frequently, because other surnames may be mentioned in the obits, people discover a name they have been researching for many years. I wish I could tell you how many family members I've stumbled upon when doing a search because someone took the time to post an obit that stays on the board forever, available to me and others years from now. The Cattaraugus county board volunteer team also posts many obits, and it is sometimes stunning to see how many emails come in from folks so excited to find a family member "hiding" within one of those postings - often one they have spent 20 years trying to find. These boards are specifically for researchers to exchange information with other researchers - and obits, bios, and other such documents are the best way to do this. From the feedback I've gotten from many - posting random obits has proved to be one of the most successful avenues for finding family history. Limiting the posting of information to be only in response to a specific request would severely curtail the odds of other researchers finding their own family history. In our experience, when random obits and bios are posted, it stimulates even more queries on our board - which gives people like you who are so kindly willing to help other researchers more chances of doing just that.

There is a large memorial stone there which says "in memory of the following families whose loved ones sleep beneath these hallowed grounds" Then it lists the familes, and Oakley is one of the names. On the back of the stone it says, "Memorial placed by the Township of Ellicott on Feb 8, 1996 to replace the original 19th century gravestones that were stolen July 1995" All that is left are bases of stones, and two taller monuments for the Hollenbeck family and the Wellington family. It is so sad. I'm sorry that I won't be able to get your picture. Beckie
