Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SRB.2ACE/12080.3.1 Message Board Post: If your question is directed at me, I don't know the answer to it. See we have this very large, very frail family bible. My grandmother had it and she brought it by one day and we kept it. So my mom copied all the information recorded into it on paper, and now the bible is wrapped in cloth, hiding in a deep dark closet. There are names, and there are dates. Not all names have dates. Some have a little information as to a location, like where someone was married, but not many. I believe my great grandmother was the person who wrote down all of the information, but I do not know for sure. As I said before, I wasn't even aware that there were Staffords in the family until I read it in the bible. So I posted it on Chautauqua County because that is where alot of my relatives ended up. But I don't know if these people ever even stepped foot in Chautauqua. My only hope is that someone comes accross this who has knowledge of someone I've listed.

    1. Columbus C. Hazzard and his family
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Hazard, Newbury, Rathbun, Maus, Wilson, Brown, Leroy Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SRB.2ACE/12091 Message Board Post: Columbus C. Hazard - The Town of Ellery, Chautauqua County, NY, was Mr. Hazard’s birthplace and here he has spent his long and useful life. He is one of Ellery’s prosperous and contented farmers, a man who has borne his share of community responsibility and faithfully performed every trust reposed in his. He is a son of Caleb and Hannah (Newbury) Hazard, and grandson of Sylvester and Anna Hazard. Sylvester Hazard, the pioneer in Chautauqua County, was a farmer in Delaware County and he and his wife came here with some of their children, others being born in Chautauqua County. Their children were: Caleb, Mary, Lucy, David, Arnold, Aldrich, Phoebe, Henry, Mercy, Robertson, Betsey, William. Caleb Hazard, the eldest son and father of Columbus C. Hazard, was born in 1807, and came with his parents to Chautauqua County in 1818. He was a carpenter and joiner in early life, but later became a farmer. He was prominent in local affairs, and at one time served his town as highway commissioner. Caleb Hazard and his wife, were the parents of the following children: Laura A., Algernon D., Columbus C. and Americus D. Columbus Hazard was born in the town of Ellery, Chautauqua County, NY, June 17, 1850. He attended the district school in his youth and grew to manhood on the home farm. When the time came to choose his own occupation he continued in the same line, and his business life has been mainly spent in farming. In politics a Republican. Mr. Hazard served as highway commissioner for one term of two years, and for about twelve years has been assessor for the town of Ellery, his term not expiring until 1923. This endorsement of his fairness and good judgment coming from his neighbors and friends of a lifetime is a splendid testimonial. The only limit to his tenure of office will be his physical ability to perform the duties pertaining thereto, so well has he performed these duties in the past. Early in its history, Mr. Hazard became a member of Ellery Grange No. 353, Patrons of Husbandry, and has for many years been one of its leading members. He has filled all the chairs, including that of master, holding that office for three years. or about fourteen years he has been a director of the Patrons Fire Relief Association and is still serving in that capacity. He is also a past worthy grand of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and affiliates with the Chautauqua Branch of the New York State Farm Bureau. Mr. Hazard married, Sept. 10, 1877, Eliza Rathbun, born March 8, 1859, near Willoughby, Ohio; died Feb. 3, 1920, in Ellery; daughter of John B. and Asenath Rathbun. Mr. and Mrs. Hazard are the parents of four children: 1. Ivah C., born April 13, 1880; married Elton Maus, of Ellery; children: Harold, Jessie and Izora. 2. Bessie Belle, born Oct. 14, 1883, died at the age of eight and one-half years. 3. C. Mabel, born Aug. 9, 1885; married Henry Wilson, of Ellery; children: Mildred and Flossy. 4. Cassius C., born April 19, 1895; he enlisted in the United States Army, Nov. 4, 1917; and was assigned to the mechanical repair department; he was sent overseas with the American Expeditionary Forces, and most of his service abroad was with the American Postoffice at Nevers, France; he was honorable discharged in March, 1919, and returned to his home; he married Ruby Brown, of Falconer. 1. GALBRAITH Family Photograph
    2. Shelley & Tomas Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Robert Hancock GALBRAITH which was taken at the L. C. Hoard Studio in Dunkirk, New York. The photograph was taken in October 1880 when Robert was just 4 months old. Based on limited research and thanks to the help of a GALBRAITH Family Researcher I believe that we do know something of Robert's family. Robert was the son of John W. & Ellen GALBRAITH. During the 1880 census the family was living in Dunkirk, NY with records indicating the following information: John W. GALBRAITH, age 48, b. in Scotland Ellen GALBRAITH, age 43, b. in Scotland Campbell GALBRAITH, age 14, b. in NY John H. GALBRAITH, age 9, b. in NY Ellen C. GALBRAITH, age 7, b. in NY Peter W. GALBRAITH, age 5, b. in NY Mary J. GALBRAITH, age 2, b. in NY I believe that Robert was likely born just after the 1880 census was recorded as he is included with the family in the 1900 census of Dunkirk, NY as follows: John W. GALBRAITH, b. Oct 1831, age 68, married 35 years, b. in Scot, parents b. in Scot, occupation not legible Ellen GALBRAITH, wife, b. June 1836, age 63, married 35 yrs, 7 children/6 living, b. Jan 1878, age 22, b. NY, School Teacher Robert GALBRAITH, son, b. June 1880, age 19, b. I agree that Abel is a good guess for a son of the John Stafford of Ellington. Given the available data, I would come to this conclusion also. But it troubles me that Abel does not appear in John Stafford's will. I am trying to think of a reason why this could be. There is always the chance that I might have missed Abel three years ago when I looked at John Stafford's will. Abel's name could have been buried in the document and I just didn't pick it up. The wills in Erie, PA are on microfiche and must be read on dim readers in the basement of the courthouse. My eyes and my patience were tried. Had I copied the entire will, I could be absolutely certain. Now I am going to guess as to why the will is in Erie, PA. I think that John may have died there, perhaps while living with his daughter in Union Twp, Erie Co, PA. She was Sally Killbourne [Stafford] Mather, wife of Louis Mather (thank you Mike Stafford for finding them there). Perhaps the will was made after John took sick and was done in anticipation of his death. Then as now, lawyers sought to include all of the potential claimants to an estate in a will so as to make the testator's wishes as clear as possible and to preclude any unwanted claims. If an an heir had been adequately provided for in the testator's eyes, then that person would usually receive a token amount, perhaps a dollar. This would happen even in cases of estrangement. But for a stirps heir not to be mentioned... well, I would think that should raise questions. The 1812 claim could provide some additional information as it mentions "heirs." These claims usually consist of one legal-sized form (front and back). They usually lack affidavits and supporting documents and are generally of limited use in providing relationships. This one could be an exception and would expect the heirs to be mentioned. Some of the written claims are quite illustrative and give some picture of the veteran's service during the war. These claims can be found at the NY State Archives in Albany. http://www.archives.nysed.gov/a/aboutnysa/index.shtml I closing, I have satisfied myself that Abel Stafford probably does not belong to one of the Stafford lines I am studying. He probably does belong to Isaac Stafford's line and I would place him as a son of John Stafford if not for the will. It looks like he belongs with that family. But could this Abel be a nephew of John's instead of a son? I note from Mike Stafford that the book "Vermont Families in 1791 - Vol 2" edited by Scott A Bartley that Abel Stafford is placed as a son of John Stafford and as a grandson of Isaac Stafford (pages 185 and 186). This information was supplied by Doris R Sheridan, 4 Sunset View Ave, Troy, NY 12180-6528. But I am left wondering where she got the information. There is some mention of the DAR and a Randall book as a source for some of these children and grandchildren. When I get the chance, I'll take a closer look and see what I can find. Rob

Her husband, Jeptha, died in 1878 and is buried in West Mina Cemetery, Chautauqua Co., NY. Abby is living with a daughter, Harriet S., in the 1880 census for Mina. Although Harriet is listed as having a last name of Lewis, she and her children, Fred H. and Fred M., were actually Anthony. I'd like to know when Abby died and where she is buried. I am hoping there might be an obit or some record of death & burial. Harriet & her children are buried in Mina Cemetery. Thanks for any help.
