On May Alice's (May) Death Certificate it states that her Mother was MARY ALICE BAINS of Fredonia. The Father is listed as David Apthorp of Fredonia. Oral family history states that May was born out of wedlock, but was raised by her real Father, David, and his wife Caroline (Carrie). I have reached a deadend. I cannot find anthing at all about May's Mother, Mary Alice Bains. I have all the information on David Apthorp already. I have searched Fredonia Federal Census line-by-line for 1880 and 1900 Census, thinking she may have been a servant in a household or a boarder, but I have not come up with anything, nor can I find her in a cemetary with what is available on line. Aaron's son, David, was my great great grandfather. Others of the family settled in Chautauqua County as well. I'm not sure when or where Aaron and Rhoda died. It would be wonderful to fine this information someday. I do know David ended up in Muskoka District, Ontario, Canada. He was married several times and may have travelled back and forth between Michigan and Ontario. I would have to agree that this line has not been easy to trace. It's nice to see I'm not the only one having problems. I believe they may have "originated" in Massachusetts. William and Esther (parents of Aaron and Betsey) were probably married in Mason, New Hampshire. Their children were born in Windham, Londonderry, Vermont. I don't have any documentation for my information as I've just been picking up bits and pieces from other people. I am willing to share what I have though. It could, if nothing else, be used as a basis for further research. Hope I can be of help to others researching the Scott/Elliot connection. Jenny

This is not your William, but it could be an ancestor. History of Chautauqua Co & Its People by Andrew Young Hanover >From the foregoing list it appears that Charles Avery was the earliest purchaser of land in Hanover ; and it may hence be inferred that he was the first settler. But several persons are said to have lived at Cattaraugus creek before Mr. Avery came. And he was there himself a year or more before the date of his purchase. It is generally conceded that the first person who lived there was Amos Sottle, who, however, it will be seen, did not obtain an article until 1806. It is extensively believed that he was the earliest settler in this county. History of Chautauqua Co. by Downs & Hedley Hanover However, settlement once commenced in this western solitude continued rapidly. Charles Avery settled in the town of Hanover, on lot 3, near the mouth of the Cattaraugus creek, in 1803, possibly in 1802, and a little later became a small trader in Indian goods. When the Holland Land Company made their original survey of Hanover, it was an almost unbroken wilderness. Great hemlocks, black walnut, whitewood, elm, beech and other timber making up these great forests. The first purchaser of land in Hanover was Charles Avery, who bought lot 3 in Cattaraugus village in 1804. He was in the town in 1803, but it does not seem that he was the first settler, that honor being generally accorded to Amos Sottle, who in 1798 and 1799 assisted in surveying that part of the Holland Purchase, being entered on the books of the surveying company as "Amos Sawtel axeman." In 1804 Charles Avery took lot 3, Cattaraugus Village. He kept a store there and remained as late as 1816, in which year he was pathmaster. Avery, the first person who took up land in Hanover, was on the land at the time of the survey, having evidently located his land and bought as soon as it was in the market.
