    1. [NYCHAUTA] Martha Herby a ''dynamic force" d 2007
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: DeeDavidson97 Surnames: HERBY Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.chautauqua/21158/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Martha Herby (pj obit) 10/21/2007 - Martha Herby, the Oregon Symphony's second flutist, died Friday of gallbladder cancer, shocking many members of Portland's close-knit music community. Called a ''dynamic force" by her friends, Herby, 55, was diagnosed in July with a rare and aggressive type of cancer. By the time her symptoms appeared, the disease was well advanced. Herby played her last public performance in June, in Oregon Ballet Theatre's production of ''Sleeping Beauty."Herby, known for her humor and devotion to the flute, joined the Oregon Symphony in 1981. To her colleagues, she was funny, outgoing and a dynamic flute player, but she would have made a poor advocate for Portland's urban growth boundary. Each Christmas season, she turned her living room into a winter wonderland, adding subdivisions upon subdivisions of ceramic buildings until the display sprawled across the entire room. In addition to playing in the Oregon Symphony for 26 years, Herby played principal flute in the former West Coast Chamber Orchestra, from 1980 to 1990, and taught at Lewis & Clark College. She performed as both principal and second flute on most of the Oregon Symphony's CD recordings with laureate music director James DePreist. ''She was the one who kept all of our egos in check," said Niel DePonte, a close friend and colleague in the Oregon Symphony. Herby didn't do things halfway, her friends said. ''That's how she played the flute," DePonte said. ''She was totally devoted to being a better flute player. She dedicated her life to the flute.''As a member of the Oregon Symphony's garden club, she enjoyed her honorary title, ''Queen of Dirt." She once dug up her entire front and back yards to put in an English garden, complete with pond, walk ways and gazebo. Her profile on the Oregon Symphony's Web site also shows her wit: ''I've had many important teachers throughout the years,'' she said. ''There was the one in junior high school who told me I wasn't disciplined enough to make it in music (he just made me mad!) and another who charged me five cents for using the wrong fingering on middle D and E-flat (that was expensive).''Herby was born in Jamestown, N.Y., and earned music degrees from the State University of New York at Fredonia and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., where she distinguished herself by winning the school's coveted Performer's Certificate. She also received coaching from some of the world's outstanding flutists, including Sir James Galway and her mentor, Keith Underwood. Herby is survived by her parents, Norman and Violet Herby, her brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Sue Herby, nephews Chris and Tim and niece Caitlin, of Chanhassen, Minn. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 in the First Congregational Church, 316 East Fourth St., Jamestown, N.Y. Friends will be received from noon to 2 p.m. in the church. A reception will follow immediately following the service in the church. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. At my wit's end trying to find the Smith Family in Guilford. 1790 Census of Guilford NY shows Nathanial Smith, along with his assumed wife and 5 children, one of which is further assumed to Lucy Smith. I am looking for any references to this family, to identify the family members, where they lived and where they may have moved to. I have searched the net for census refs with no luck, as I don't have an ancestry.com membership. If someone could be kind enough to find and send me an image of any census findings, or any other primary source findings for this family, I would be grateful. Kindest regards, and thank you in advance...Al The abridged note below was sent to me by another wonderful SKS and distant cousin... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What we do know: Samuel b.1714 d.1782, son of John(II) and Hannah Nichols married 1740 Mary Lamb, b. 1712 d. 1749, dau of Jonathan Lamb. They had 3 children Samuel, Lucy and Mary. I am descended from Samuel. The Lambs are a very important family too. After Mary Lyndes (Lamb) died in 1749 Samuel married widow Dorcus Richardson Smith in 1750. Docus had Children with James Smith First husband:SMITH, JAMES, m. Dorcas Richardson, August 15,1727. Children: 1.James, 1728. d. after 1756. 2. Dorcas (Jr) Minor child in 1750 guardianship papers; m. Benjamin Ellis, August 1751 in Leicester. 3. Abigail, 1733; d. Born: 7 Dec 1730 Southboro, Middlesex, Ma; Died: 24 Feb 1808 Spencer, Worcester, Ma. Bought the homestead of Samuel & Dorcus Lynde 1769, recorded after Samuel's death about 1782. This blended family lived in Leicester and Malden. Here is where Dorcus's son Nathaniel Smith marries Samuel's dau. Lucy Lyndes. Marriage 1 Nathaniel SMITH b: 16 Sep 1738 in Leicester, Worcester, MA; * Married: 14 Aug 1762 Lucy Lyndes, in Leicester, Worcester, MA 2 1[This is intention date] I did find Nathaniel and Lucy living in Guilford VT/NY along with Lucy's brother Samuel and his wife Debra Perkins. 1772 Family in Guilford. Census of Guilford NY shows Nathanial Smith, wife and 5 children. As you can see Nathaniel and Lucy by 1772 have 5 children....names unknown, but they are living in America at this point. The is a troublesome time historically in Guilford. <>This may give you a jumping off point to research. 1. Try NY Census for Guilford after 1772 for the Smith family. 2. I also suggest you check the census in Plymouth VT from 1790-1800 for them to. If they disappear from census, then perhaps this is the time they relocated??? -- Al ...: Genealogist... Brad Grimes & Lilly Pratt were my great grandparents. The 1910 census showing her as having had 4 kids with 3 still living is correct. Her only son with Brad, Ernest was born 5-15-1888 in Gilby, Grand Forks Co., ND. He died 8-17-1889 and is buried in the Inkster Cemetery in Inkster, ND. In the 1920 census, Ophelia or Orpha as the family called her? She had married John Peter Franzwa from Minnesota. Lilly Pratt did die 12-12-1943 and is listed in the Minnesota death index but her name is listed as Lillian Finette Grimes. For quite some time she was refered by to by some researchers as the "many married Lilly". Some were attributing a marriage to a Baldwin, when it was actually her daughter Nellie Horton that married Fred Baldwin. John Alexander Grimes, called Jack by family members, went into the military in 1907 and stayed in until 1920. He is listed in the North Dakota Military Men book along with all of his assignments. Long about 1922-1924, John roofed a house for my grandfather, outside Bridesville, Britich Colombia. He then appears in a 1930 census Tanner, King Co., WA working in a logging camp. Austin Grimes has not been found in the 1900 census as yet. In 1910, he is in Baudette, MN, working as a barn foreman. In 1915, he signed up with the Canadian Espeditionary Forces at Calgary Alberta. We think he died in 1943, and is buried in Calgary but it is not confirmed as yet. Flora Grimes line mainly went up into Canada and quite a bit of progress has been mad on them. This Horton fellow though has been a problem are there any marriage books for that area of Chautauqua Co.? I have no first name and obviously only a death window of 5 years if they were ever married. Thanks a million, Mac, O.R.G. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In the 1880 census, she is housekeeper for Brad Grimes with a 3 year old daughter Nellie Horton. She is listed as a widow. I have been unable to find any Horton that was buried in the area between 1875 and 1880. There was unconfirmed info that it was a John Horton, but the only one I find locally was married and having kids before during and after Nellie was born. Thanks for any assistance.
