Dear List: I'd like to share some information about activities at the upcoming Canal Days in Port Byron, NY that may be of interest to folks with roots and history in the area. The Port Byron, NY Canal Days 99' will be held on August 6 - 8th. The Lock 52 Historical Society on Pine St. will have an open house during the event and will have people portraying historical characters from the Village's past. Mt. Pleasant Cemetery records will be available for research there. The Historic Erie House, a former saloon and hotel along the Erie Canal (on Maiden Lane) will also be open for tours. Guest Dawn Roe will be offering free genealogy lookups cross referencing surnames with computerized databases and the Internet to search for your roots during this years event. Dawn will have a photographic tribute of Port Byron & Weedsport during the Erie Canal Era on Sunday at 2:00 PM. This year's Canal Days will spotlight the former Rochester, Syracuse & Eastern Railroad (Trolley) Station. Between 1909 and 1931, that trolley station (now the American Legion Bldg.) was along the interurban rail transportation run that serviced much of Central, NY. Trolley No. 1036 owned by The Plank Road Historical Society of North Syracuse will be there, together with a slide show about the R.S.& E. Railroad on Saturday at 11am & 1pm. The NEW History Book on Cayuga County, "Back to Before," published for the County's Bicentennial is expected to be available there and a book signing by Charlie Itsin (the book's editor) is planned.
