For free census checks: Are you in or near a good sized city? Our public library has computers reserved for genealogy research ... with free access to both Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest. (I actually find the census information easier to deal with on Heritage Quest.) Our library also has a system where those with library cards can go online through them from home and access Heritage Quest (but not Ancestry). Diane Herson
