Folks - First, I apologize for the cross posting. I am trying to learn more about this specific resource. Second, I am trying to figure out the location of the documents that would have awarded this pension to Joel Downs. The source noted below is a book that was transcribed and posted on line, but the transcriptionist is a bit silent about what the number means on the far right. Myself and other researchers presume it refers to a NARA number. HOWEVER, when I was in DC about two months ago and I quickly looked for military information on this individual and found only a military roster extract for him. What intrigues me is that it says Joel Downs was on the rolls of Captain Jehiel Dayton's Company of Artillery Pliny Adam's Regiment, NY Militia. But that he was in the regiment for less than two weeks and was listed as "absent-sick" name in pre. Column cancelled. This was in Sep 1814. YET - in Ohio, everything about him refers to his being a Veteran of the War of 1812. When I found reference to his pension, I thought, maybe this will clear some things up. I have done a lot of other veteran related work, and I am a bit surprised that anyone would be so proud of service of 9 days which was spent being sick. The more I thought about it, I almost wonder if he might have served in other regiments or earlier service and that I didn't find his records. A DC based researcher went back to NARA and tried to find this record - no luck whatsoever. They found the same document I did and that was it. The Trumbull County archivists notes that they have no index that lists such a claim. They surmised that a page by page review of the Court of Common Pleas could be worthwhile. But, since he was in Warren, Trumbull County, OH, from 1818 until his death in 1862. So, a 36 year search in a few hour visit to that part of Ohio in a month does not foresee a success. So, I am asking folks if anyone is familiar with this source??? If so, could you provide some direction as to where to look for the Pension application documents??
