Diane You mention from 1790 and up for Deeds for Cayuga County NY. It would help if you could pinpoint your Date the Deed was filed. Counties changed over the years and it would be filed at the Court House of the County it was in when the Deed was filed. Thus making the date important to determine which Court House would have the Deed. Cayuga did not become a County until 1799. From 1794 to 1799 it was part of Onondaga County and from 1791 until 1794 it was part of Herkimer County. Prior to 1791 from 1772 it was included with Montgomery County NY (Actually Montgomery was known as Tryon County from. 1771-1784). Pat R
oops. I forgot to mention these records are in Auburn, NY. -----Original Message----- From: Jim & Sue Allen [mailto:jallen2@rochester.rr.com] Sent: Sunday, April 22, 2007 2:10 PM To: nycayuga@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [NYCAYUGA] Searching for deeds For Cayuga Co, they are in the County Clerk's office, on the first floor. These are at the clerk's counter that you have to pass to get to the records. When you are ready to get copies, write the name, ledger number and page number on the paper, take it to the place where they make the copies from microfilm a block away (they can tell you how to get there at the Clerk's office). I forget what it cost per page but it's not unreasonable. WARNING - I wanted a will for a friend and it turned out to be 107 pages !! Check before you commit! By the way, when you try to find were the copy room is, it used to be part of a jail and is hard to fine. You can park there too. Do not plan to photograph the records - it's not allowed. The records from 1790 start in the Onondaga book and is in the far back right of the archive. Its index and ledger is labeled OF or OA I think. If you get beyond 1846 or something like that, the index is in under the computer terminals you passed to get to the back of the room. After you look in the index, try to find the deed in the books before you order it. I found that some of the page numbers are off and you end up having to go back to the index. Also, take notes from the originals if you have time. They are much better than the microfilm. Some of the index books list Grantor on the left and Grantee on the right. Don't make the mistake of using the last ledger reference on the left, while copying the info on the right. You might have to back up a page to get the previous right ledger....or the copy staff won't be able to find the right deed. When you're in a hurry, it's a pain to walk back and forth. Make sure you can read the copies before you go. Don't just "look at them", actually try to read them. I ran out of there with lots of copies and I can't actually read key words like east or west. If you use the parking meters across the street, in front of the old jail, bring lots of quarters. The people there are helpful and the people that make the copies are outstanding. You can order copies later if you don't have time to get them while you are there. I work until 11:30, take a batch of forms to the copy place, have lunch, come back to get my copies and check for problems/print quality, and then go back to the clerk's to continue. One more thing, as long as you are getting copies made, check the probate indexes that are also there to the right of the cashier's desk. Just ask. They are not in the clerk's area. If you are looking for Mortgage records, they are also on the back wall of the archive in the Clerks office. oops, I lied, that wasn't the last thing: - some of the deeds can be copied right at the clerks office but those have to be in books that have spines that come apart. If you are looking at old deeds (or have a mixture), you should plan to go to the copy center. Oh yea, - they have large working spaces, but no stools or chairs that I could see. HI Bill - I'm a mac user - I'm not having problems downloading messages. You can compensate I believe for note having the right mouse by using control click - you can't tell but I'm hesitating since I'm using a lap top now. My 6+ year old iMac - has trouble surfing the web since the technology of the internet has risen above the highest level browser I can use with OS9 - but I can get email on my iMac and actually prefer to do so. What I want to add is - with an older Mac - you can capture an image in another way - if you use Netscape - you can go to you cache and find the image there - for a brief period of time. You will then be able to open up that image in pictureviewer - copy it and save it into what ever imagine soft ware you use. I seldem save your photos becuase it takes a lot of memory - but when I want to - that is how I could do it - if I can't capture it a different way. With Safari - I don't seem to be able to get into the cache - but you can grab and drag - anyway - try control click - if you want to contact me off list feel free and perhaps I can give you some other tips. It's wonderful what you contribute to the discussion through your photos/scans. As we speak I've just referred a friend and former work/peer - (she's retired) to your Junius map. I have gotten a lot of responses and it so far sounds like people with PC's and Macs can down load the images and save them in digital form. But it also sounds like the quality may be lacking. I can not fully use the site as I am hooked at home to the internet via a LINIX box with strick security actions in place by my computer person. If you right click on the map you choose, not the transparent map, and choose "save picture as" It will save on your PC.
