    1. Bouck, Cogswell, Cummings, Sparling, Luckey & Stacy
    2. Ginny Arveson
    3. I am looking for ancestors/relatives by the above names who lived in Cayuga & Ontario Co in the early 1800s - BARNEY BOUCK b. abt 1800 m. CLARANA/CLARISSA b. abt 1806 before 1823 in NY - Clarana's last name was given as SPARLING on a son's death record and COGSWELL, dau of GEORGE & CLARANIA (CUMMINGS) COGSWELL on a cemetery record. A W. HENRY SPARLING b. 1807 Albany Co.l ived next to Barney & Clarana after they moved to OH, then IA and I was going on the assumption that they (W. Henry & Clarana) were sibs until I came across the reference to George Cogswell as Clarana' father. W. HENRY was married to LOVINA LUCKEY b. 1810 NY and they had a child James b. 1831 in Cayuga Co, NY. BARNEY & CLARANA/CLARISSA (COGSWELL or SPARLING) had a son, JOHN STACY BOUCK, b 1823 in Victor, Ontario Co, NY All of the above people moved from NY to OH, then IA in the early 1800's. And all of the above surnames (including STACY which might have some connection because of John Stacy Bouck's name) appeared in Cayuga, Ontario & Albany counties during the early 1800s but I haven't been able to make the connections. Some also appeared in Schoharie county, where many Boucks resided. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have information about these people. Also, all of these ancestors were very active in the Methodist Episcopal churches in OH and IA - were there any ME churches in Cayuga or Ontario counties in the early 1800's? I plan to go to my local Family History Center this week to see what microfilmed records might be available to order. Any suggestions on the best ones to order for vital records? 3. Hello everyone, I've just subscribed my Mom to this listserv. She's learning how to use the computer and has done a lot of genealogy in the past, but recently lost her sight. We are looking for software she can use to see what is written on the screen. Is there anyone who is interested in communicating with her on geneaology stuff. I live out of state and use this listserve a lot. Also does anyone know of great software she could use? Thanks, Kathy Bench-Martin

    1. [NYCAYUGA-L] Woodworth/Johnson
    2. Jim Woodworth
    3. I am new to the list, I joined hoping to track down the ancestors of my great-great grandfather, John Woodworth. Here is what I know about him: John Woodworth was born about 1818 in New York. He married Mary Caroline Johnson on 8 Jan 1845 in St. Peters Protestant Episcopal Church in Auburn, Cayuga County, New York. Mary was the daughter of Isaac W. Johnson and Nancy Dow. After Nancy Dow died around 1839 Isaac Johnson married Mary Kelsey. John and Mary had a daughter, Mary Jane born 22 Feb 1847 in Auburn. Sometime between Feb 1847 and May 1849 they moved to Ohio. The 1850 census for Brownhelm, Ohio lists John Woodward, age 32 and his wife, Mary. We know, because of the names of their two oldest children, that this is John and Mary Woodworth. There was an Edward Woodward, age 33, living with them. John and Mary had a son, Isaac Johnson Woodworth, born in Brownhelm in Dec 1850. John Woodworth died in 27 Aug 1858 in Cortland Twp., De Kalb County, Illinois. I've seen information on a John Woodworth, wife Mary Johnson, son Johnson Woodworth in Mayfield, Fulton County, New York. The dates are similar, but the discrepancies are greater than the similarities, except for the names. It's all very confusing, can anyone help me find John's ancestors? 1. [NYCAYUGA-L] Thomas SMITH b.1759 at Aurelius
    2. Joyce Mason
    3. Hi, I'm new to the list, and researching a SMITH family that was at Cayuga County in the 1750's. I'm not sure how long they lived at Aurelius but a son Thomas SMITH was born there in 1759. It is all that I have on this ancestor. No wife's name, no parents names. He had a daughter, Eleanor born 1774 in NY but I'm not sure if it was in Cayuga Co. Are there any Smith researchers on this list? Or would any of you have any Cayuga County histories that may mention this family? Any assistance VERY MUCH appreciated, Joyce at Desert Hot Springs,CA

    1. [NYCAYUGA-L] wills/probates
    2. TRACY REINHARDT
    3. I am a newcomer to this list, but wish to second the request for knowledge of an index for wills/probates. (I searched the county website and didn't find anything) I happen to do lookups for anyone digging for infomation on the members of the Owasco Dutch Reformed Church. Now I am hoping that someone can do a return favor. I have been so excited, ever since I visited your website page on the Conowago Colony! What a wealth of information on my ancestry migration. Now I need to prove/disprove my link to Isaac Parsell, and I know his will was probated there (Bx 5, P.W. Nov 21, 1824 Book C1, page 37) along with that of his son John, (Bx 120, G July 22, 1868 Guard. E98 ). I am researching the descendants of Henry Parsels and Sarah Conklin, and this is the first discovery in many years, that I may have found Henry's ancestry. (Others have stated that he came from NJ via PA, but your Conowago Colony website, was the first factual data that I have uncovered) Any assistance that anyone could lend me, would be most appreciated. And do not hesitate to visit my own website, as my BRAFORD, CONKLIN, PARSELS surnames, all have Cayuga origins. http://www.iosys.net/treinhardt/tracy/surnames.html Tracy Reinhardt

    3. Hi I believe that my Jonathan Burgess (and possibly a brother Joel) are from Cayuga County - the sons, most likely, of Jonathan Burgess (son of Seth Burgess) but, as yet, have no proof. I do know that Jonathan Burgess (of Cayuga) died Nov 7, 1849, and wondered if anyone had indices of wills/probates. Thank you for your help. I seriously doubt any court would post a list of probate proceedings on a website, except perhaps a court calendar. Courts have what are usually straight alphabetical lists of case files, year by year, and sometimes over a period of several years. They should go back to the beginning of the court system. I wonder what the status is of very old wills that have been filed for probate in NY State. Whether the clerk's offices keep them or not, you'd have to phone the chief clerk for the county or the presiding judge and ask. Look up the court phone number in the white pages for the county involved. In California, the listings are at the front under the government level, such as county or city or state. I don't know if court phone numbers are online. You also have to establish under what circumstances probate proceedings were required. If a person had no property and/or the sort of property not subject to probate was left, you would not have a probate proceeding at all. Perhaps, if you had a chat with the chief clerk, you'd get some help on these questions. Then, again, he might tell you to talk to an attorney. :( Regards, Joan in Los Angeles

    2. Dear List: I'd like to share some information about activities at the upcoming Canal Days in Port Byron, NY that may be of interest to folks with roots and history in the area. The Port Byron, NY Canal Days 99' will be held on August 6 - 8th. Pleasant Cemetery records will be available for research there. The Historic Erie House, a former saloon and hotel along the Erie Canal (on Maiden Lane) will also be open for tours. Guest Dawn Roe will be offering free genealogy lookups cross referencing surnames with computerized databases and the Internet to search for your roots during this years event. Dawn will have a photographic tribute of Port Byron & Weedsport during the Erie Canal Era on Sunday at 2:00 PM. This year's Canal Days will spotlight the former Rochester, Syracuse & Eastern Railroad (Trolley) Station. 3. Hi List, This is Ken colby46@juno.com I am looking for proof of a service record for my 3rd great-grandfather Wolcott Hinman. For the Cayuga County Hisotorial Societ sent me a copy of the Hinman's that are buried in the Indian Mound Cemetery there in Cayuga County. It showes that Wolcott Hinman served in the War of 1812. I looked up Pensions for that war, but his name is not shown. He did live long enough to apply for a pension if he did service, but his name is not in the book of pensions for that war. If anyone has data on this family please e-mail me. Waiting to here. THANKS Ken ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
