Dear Connie: Aurelius was both a Military Tract Township in 1790 and is also a current Town. The confusing concept for many people to understand is...when discussing the history and breakup of land in Central, NY the term "Township" and "Town," are not the same. The term Township relates to earlier, larger areas that were later subdivided into smaller areas know as Towns. The other confusing aspect is...There was an original Military Tract Township named "Aurelius" and when it was subdivided into smaller Towns, one of the smaller Towns retained the name "Aurelius." At the time of the Revolutionary War (circa 1776-1783) the Central Portion of NY State was only sparsely settled and mostly inhabited and claimed by the Cayuga & Onondaga Indian Nations. To raise Troops or Regiments to fight in the Revolution, NY State decided to get the Indian Nations to release their claims and offer Bounty land payment to soldiers if they would enlist. Consequently NY State decided to divided an area of about 1.75 million acres (all of the Central portion of NY State) in a series of Townships (not to be confused with current Towns). This area became known as the "Military Tract of Central NY." Each Township contained 60,000 acres. Each of the Townships was divided into 100 lots. Thus, each Township had 100 lots, containing 600 acres per lot. There were a total of 28 Townships created for the purpose of providing the bounty land lots promised to soldiers who enlisted. At first the Townships were only given numbers, but later, a clerk in the State Land Office names Robert Harper decided to name the Townships. He was a student of the classics and gave the Townships, Greek/Roman names. Township number 8 was named "Aurelius." The area that was included within this original Aurelius Township of 1790 is now composed of All the current City of Auburn, NY and the adjacent Towns of Throop, Sennett, Owasco, Fleming and Aurelius. If your looking at records between 1790 and about circa 1830, the name Aurelius may have referred to the larger Township area. The Town of Owasco was formed from a portion of the original Township of Aurelius in 1802. The Town/Village (later City) of Auburn was formed from a portion of the Township of Aurelius in 1823. The Town of Fleming was formed from a portion of the original Township of Aurelius in 1823. The Town of Sennett was formed from a portion of the original Township of Aurelius in 1827 and a portion of the current Town of Throop was formed from Sennett in 1859. An area of the larger TownSHIP of Aurelius remained and was established as the smaller Town of Aurelius. The Town of Aurelius still exists today and is located west of the City of Auburn, NY. The current Town of Aurelius includes a portion of the Military Tract Township of Aurelius and a portion of the former Cayuga Indian Reservation area. Kathi's listing of websites with early maps should help. Could the BALL family you are researching include John Sterling Ball and Margot Walker?? They settled in Kent Co. MI (following the migration pattern of my Braford family from Cayuga NY to Kent Co MI to Mont) James Sterling Ball was born 9 March 1862 in Kent Co., the son of John Sterling Ball and Margel Walker. and there is a neat story concerning him in a Montana biographical book, the name of which I can't find right now. (Avon Mont. History?) Here is the excerpt, which is TOTALLY FASCINATING and worth sharing: Two years after James Ball's birth, his family moved to Omaha, Neb. When James was five his mother died and he and his two sisters were put in a home where they remained for three years. The older sister died and their father took the younger sister, Anna, to live with him. A friend of the family, Mr Nelson, was going West to take pictures of buffalo and he begged Mr Ball to let young James go with him as his companion and to help with the mules. So on August 3, 1868 they left Omaha with a covered wagon, four mules, two saddle horses, and trinkets and goods to trade with the Indians. When winter overtook them they were in a small basin northeast of Helena, where Nelson decided to stay, near a friendly Indian camp. This basin is still called the Jim Ball basin. They built a dugout in the hill where there was plenty of grass for the horses. The winter would have been quiet and uneventful but an epidemic of smallpox broke out in the Indian camp and Nelson gained the undying gratitude of the Indians by nursing and saving many of them. However, his young ward contracted the disease and was very sick, but recovered in the spring. Nelson decided to return east as he was running short of plates for his camera as well as goods to trade with the Indians. They started for Deadwood, South Dakota but ran into hostile Indian country. One night they met some soldiers from Fort Laramie on the trail of warriors who had been on the warpath, killing settlers and driving off horses. They wanted Nelson to camp with them, but he had never come in contact with Indians on the warpath and thought that if he treated them right they would do him no harm. So he went up the creek a mile and a half to pitch camp. He was developing some pictures by the light of the fire while James watched from his bed under the wagon, when the Indians suddenly rode into their camp. One shot Nelson in the spine rendering him helpless. He told Jim to get his horse and go to the soldiers for help while he kept shooting at the Indians. So Jim crawled out in the dark, caught his horse and would have gotten away undetected except that one of the mules followed the horse. A warrior saw the mule and followed, shooting the boy in the left side. Jim held on to his horse until he reached the soldiers, then fainted from fright and loss of blood. When the soldiers reached Nelson's camp they found him dead, his wagon and equipment burned. Young Jim then went by wagon to Deadwood and was placed in the care of a hotel manager there. The hotel manager was kind to him and when Jim got well he was given work as an errand boy for the hotel. He was only ten years old but being livery born and large for his age he told everyone that he was 13 and got by with it. He remained there for 13 years and even rode pony express for a time. One day a race horse man from St. Louis by the name of Courtendoil came to the hotel. James went back with him, stopping off to visit his father and sister in Omaha. He rode as a jockey for Courtendoil until one day he was thrown from a horse, breaking both legs and a wrist. Courtendoil took him to his home and had the best doctors care for him. Courtendoil took a liking to the young man, now 16, and when he had recovered was put in charge of Courtendoil's motherless daughter, who was a cripple. All three of them came west to Helena to visit a brother, John Courtendoil and family. About this time James began to think about an education. He had learned little except what Nelson had taught him, so he took a job as clerk in a store owned by I B Wells and went to night school. Here he met his future wife, Miss Della Braford, niece of his employer. He worked for Wells for some time and in the spring of 1876 came to Old Blackfoot City, where he worked as a butcher boy, delivering meat to the numerous miners. Here he met Mr Blair and went to work at Helmville. Blair had been a school teacher and through the long winter evenings he helped Jim get an education. He worked for Blair for four years. In 1889 the railroad came through Avon and James' father came with it as a section foreman. James, having saved some money under Blair's advice, went back to Helena to school. While working and attending school for three years he renewed his acquaintance with Miss Braford and they were married in Helena on Feb 22, 1886. In the meantime, James' father quit railroading and took a homestead about six miles north of Avon on Three Mile Creek where the young people went to live. John Ball died 12 years later leaving his homestead to James who lived there for 36 years, finally selling it to James McGillvary. They are found in the 1900 census for Ophir twsp, Deer Lodge Co Mont., and Della states that she is the mother of 13 children, 8 of whom are still living. From 1900 to 1914 James Ball drove the stage from Blackfoot City to Avon, then Mr Buckland took over. Della died 18 Mar 1927 and James died 28 May 1940.Both are buried in Avon, Mont. Tracy Reinhardt
I am looking for any information on the Kells family of Mentz. The only information I have is that Harriet Kells Pennoyer died 4 May 1852 in Grand Haven, Muskegon Co., Michigan. She was the wife of Henry Pennoyer. In a memoir written by Henry's second wife she describes Harriet as a granddaughter of Mrs. Sarah Kells of Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY. I found the following in the New York 1820 Census- Mentz, Cayuga County page 49: Kells, Sarah 2 males 16-26 2 females under 10 1 female 16-26 1 female 45 and over Since Harriet was born in 1815, she could very well have been one of the members of this household. Any further information on this family would be greatly appreciated, thank you Denise Fischer Santa Clara, CA

Jeremiah V. Raner born 17 Dec 1835 Niles, Cayuga County, New York married 31 December 1865 Jasper, Steuben County, New York Elmira Banks born 27 Jan 1848 Canisteo, Steuben County, New York. Both buried Woodlawn Cemetery in Steuben County, NY He died 9 Feb 1909 and she died 12 Jan 1929 (have her obituary) They had 9 childern---Eri G m Millie Banks, Arthur, Millie (Ibelieve is a male), Hatti m Williss Eugene VanSkiver, Edward m1 Dora Eliza Bailey m2 Leona Maude Tuller m3 ???? and m4 Nellie ?????, Nellie m William Kellegg, Francis Marion, Ulylsesses Grant m Etta Mae Reed born 1879. Grant Raner as he was called died in an auto accident near Howard, NY in early 1940's. Hannah--------------Raner Ball was born ca 1801 according to 1860 census which lists her age as 59, also listed this census was Jeremiah 24, son and Lurinda 15. Gary sent me the information from his files that Hannah Raner m 2 Nov 1852 in Owasco,NY a town directly north of Niles to Hedden Ball who had been m1 to Sarah Kemp who died 4 May 1852 and is buried Fosterville Cemetery in Aurelius, Cayuda County, NY. That they had a son Samuel born 1852 according to the census and this may be why he remarried in only six months to Hannah Raner. (Who was Hannahs first husband and did he die also?) When and where? The 1865 Census lists Hannah Hannah Ball age 64 , B Cayuga County, 11 childern, married twice, now married, no husband---Jeremiah Raner 29, B Cayuga County, single, farming, served 86th NY Inf, Co B Sept 9, 1861, 36 months, i year in Michigan , Sept 1863.-----Amos W. Dennis age 15 B Stuben County, protege, farming. (was this a grandson of Hannah?) I have ordered Jeremiah Raners Veteran Records and hoping to find his father and mothers names. Hope this helps to put some time period to my query. Thank you to anyone who can help me on this family. Any help appreciated. Barbara in Colorado Bittbd@aol.com
I found a note in my Ball family file that Hedden Ball married Hannah Raner on November 2, 1852 in Owasco, NY. Owasco is a town in Cayuga County directly North of Niles. Hedden Ball's first wife, Sarah Kemp died on May 4, 1852. She may have died in childbirth with her son Samual who lists his year of birth as 1852 in census records. Sarah Kemp Ball is buried in the Fosterville Cemetery in the town of Aurelius in Cayuga County, NY. If Hedden was left with a newborn son, this could explain only six months between Heeden's first wife's death and his marriage to Hannah Raner. I also found a death record for Hedden Ball's daughter, Louise. She died in Montezuma, NY on July 28, 1916. Her birth date is listed as December 14, 1842. There might be an obituary listing her siblings surviving her in the Auburn or Port Byron newspaper or a record in the Cayuga County Surrogate's office for a Probate or Letters of Administration if she had any estate to settle. These sometimes list the currrent address of surviving relatives. ----- Original Message ----- From: <BITTBD@aol.com> To: <NYCAYUGA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 11, 1999 1:01 AM Subject: Re:Raner/Reed in Cayuga County > Need help finding information on the families of Jeremiah Raner who was born > at Niles, New York. Can anyone tell me where Aurelius is or was located. It isn't on my map. Is the town still in existence? Also, does anyone know if you would go through Steuben Co., NY or Steuben Co., Ind to migrate to Lenawee Co., Michigan. My Rawson Southwick was born in Aurelius, Cayuga Co. in 1815 and he showed up on the 1840 Steuben Co., Ind. Census Index that is on Ancestry.com. I am wondering if maybe this was a mistake and should be Steuben Co., NY. I can't find him at all on the Census in the library, but our library doesn't have everything. He also got married in Lenawee Co. on June 28, 1840. I cannot connect Rawson to any parents in Cayuga Co. I am leaning towards Elisha Southwick who was in Aurelius in the 1820 Census and the 1790 Census. If anyone knows the answer to my questions, please e-mail me.
