Hi again, Also, not meaning to "push" the issue, but I just did a search for "PARCELL" on the new beta version of rootsweb's surname finder and the search answered back with: "Here are the lists we know about that appear to be related to the PARCELL surname." PARSLEY, PARSLOW, PEARSALL, PREIZEL, PRESLEY, PRESSLEY, PURCELL, PURSELL, PURSLEY. Linda, Variants can/may be mis-spellings (as in bad transcription), but to view them as that alone may not be entirely accurate. "Different strokes for different folks," as they say. Also, are you on a PARCELL surname list somewhere? I looked under rootsweb and noticed there IS a "PURCELL" list (which includes variants), but NO "PARCELL" list. (The list jumps from PARAMORE to PARCHER) You might want to check it out. SEE: Surname/Family Lists Hosted by RootsWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/surnames/index.html RM PS: I was born and raised in Southern Cayuga county and knew a Purcell family who lived there. =========== Linda Selub wrote: > Ron -- I do not know, but given how many names were mis-spelled over the > years, it could be possible. > Linda > > -----Original Message----- > From: Ron Myers > Linda, > Would "PURCEL(L)" be a viable variant of PARCELL? Ron -- I do not know, but given how many names were mis-spelled over the years, it could be possible. Linda, Tracy: Do you have any Parsells ancestors from Orange County NY? I have a Jacob Mace marrying Ellenor Parsals in Orange County NY about 1777. I have been trying to connect John Henry Parcels Mace with this couple -- he was born in Orange County NY about 1784. Any help would be appreciated. I smiled when I saw the Coykendall query, because the person who wrote it might not realize how much fun they are going to have digging into early American history, New Amsterdam etc etc. I have encountered the Coykendal name many times when researching the origins of my Parsels and Conklin families through the various Dutch Reformed Church records, which are so plentiful and wonderful. My family lines settled in Owasco, but originally were from Dutchess Co. NY and from Bergen Co. NJ. I strongly urge you to subscribe to the Dutch-Colonies list, because the Coykendal name is part of the early Dutch history of America. Tracy
What would the Enumeration District be for Auburn? I want to order this census from my local FHC, but there are two Cayuga Co films for 1910. One has the E.D.s #31-46 and the other has E.D.s 1-30 and 47-71. Thank you very much. Sue Moyer

I know that I am currently working on transcribing the records of St.John's church (Episcopal), established in 1868. Efforts to establish this church began about 1855 - I BELIEVE (and please understand I am a fairly new member to this church which is now a blended church - Ss. Peter & John (Episcopal) - that St. Peter's (Episcopal) was in existence prior to that. As to other churches - other than the Owasco Dutch Reformed Church, I have little knowledge, but think the Cayuga Co. USGENWEB page has quite a bit of information on the formation of many churches in the area. Hello: There was a large contingent of the Kuykendall family in Hampshire Co., WVA early on. Dear Researcher of the Coykendall name: I am the Owasco historian , and have much information on the Cuykendall/Coykendall/Koykendall family. Did you know it was in Owasco when they put a C-in front of their name dropping the K? Martin Cuykendall donated the land for the Owasco Dutch Reformed Church. He was Owasco's first postmaster and ran a sawmill on Dutch Hollow Brook. He fought in the Revolution and was an indian scout in Orange county as a youth of 12. Their record here begins in 1800. I will search my files, records and wills for the Hanchett name. Laurel Auchampaugh Owasco Historian
Hi If you knew what their religion was, the record might be in Church records. Doubtful that there would be in civil record of it. 'PLEASE NOTE: RECORDS ONLY GO BACK TO 1881. However, it was not mandatory in New York State to record until 1914; therefore, many records between 1881 and 1914 were not registered. Looking for the parents of Edward Coykendall. He was born 1815 in NY. His wife, Fannie Hanchett was born 20 Oct 1717, Owasco, Cayuga, NY. Her parents were John Palmer Hanchett and Rebecca Sawtelle. I am hoping that there might be a Coykendall connection in Cayuga Co, since it was the birthplace of Edward's wife. Any help would be greatly appreciated Meredith DeBuse
I believe my gr grandparents, ARTHUR BROWNING WOOD and MARY JANE VENN were married in AUBURN, NY 12 FEB 1866. How can I get a copy of their marriage certificate? Is it even possible? Thanks, Susan

Hello Cayuga Listers, I am the listowner of the BEARDSLEY mailing list, and this morning I posted to my list that I had discovered a BEARDSLEY family bible, published in 1839, for sale on eBay. I have no financial interest in this bible, and am not connected with eBay or the seller....my only interest is that the bible be united with one of the descendants of the family that owned it. The family that owned the bible resided in Auburn, NY, and the bible includes a history of that family back to the immigrant, William Beardsley, who was born ca 1605, and was one of the founders of Stratford, CT. Inside the bible, along with the usual family entries, are scraps of paper from the 1800s with family data written on them, and clippings of newspaper obituaries. Some of the most "recent" entries are for the surnames of BEARDSLEY, HILLS, NOBLE and BUTLER. To see pictures of the bible, and to read the full description, click on the following URL: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=274476412 One of the subscribers to the BEARDSLEY list, Jeff Birdsley, studied the pictures at the above URL, and determined that the bible belonged to Nelson BEARDSLEY of Auburn, NY With Jeff's permission, I am posting his interesting message about this family: Re: the Beardsley family bible on ebay, I closely examined the photos they posted and reached the conclusion that this is the family bible of Nelson (7) Beardsley (John 6, Eliakim 5, Samuel 4, John 3, Samuel 2, William 1). The portrait shown is that of Nelson Beardsley (it is also in the I.H. Beardsley book, p. 306) and the deaths listed in the bible are those of his children and their spouses. According to IHB, Nelson, son of John Beardsley and Alice Booth, lived 1807-1894 and was an extremely successful businessman and banker in Auburn, NY. "In a personal letter once he said: 'They say I am worth $6,000,000 but I am not.' He without doubt was the wealthiest man of the name (Beardsley)" (IHB p. 307). Incidentally, I once came across Nelson Beardsley's personal copy of Levi Beardsley's "Reminiscences", now owned by Michigan State University's library. Someone, presumably Nelson, had written in pencil, in the front of the book, the above descent from William to Nelson. There was also some info. on his mother (dau. of Abel Booth and _?_ Curtis) and on his father and grandfather. Presumably this family bible also describes his descent from William (b. 1605). Jeff Birdsley If any of the subscribers to the Cayuga list are descended from this family, I know that you will be interested in checking out the bible. It would be fantastic if the bible could be back in the hands of the family! I have corresponded with the seller of the bible, and he has offered to copy the entries, so when I receive them from him I will post them to the list.
