My aunt Ruth Hewes Spicer was from King Ferry and her grandparents were the Ward Family from King Ferry, NY. She lives in Freeville, NY not far from Groton/Cortland. My uncles name is Benjamin James Spicer. He goes by the name B. James Spicer in the phone directory and used to live in Trumansburg, NY until just a few years ago. For many years my Aunt and her brother owned her grandparents old farm in King Ferry. She may be able to fill in some gaps on the King Ferry Ward family line and whether or not they are connected to the families that have been posted over the last several days. She also had a brother David Hewes who I think lives in Ithaca. The Hewes all went to Sherwood Central School with my mother and father. The school district now is called Southern Cayuga Central Schools. My aunt also had two cousins, Phyllis Ward and Bea Ward that lived on Rt 34B near Popular Ridge. Don't know how they were connected but they were from the same King Ferry Ward family. An uncle of hers (also A Ward) lived on Rt 90 near King Ferry. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ron Myers" <myers@rohan.sdsu.edu> To: <NYCAYUGA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 07, 2000 11:37 AM Subject: Re: [NYCAYUGA] Roll Call: Ward ... > Hi Nancy, > > Speaking of Wards in So. Hi Nancy, Speaking of Wards in So. Cayuga Cnty, there was a well-entrenched family in the King Ferry area that lived on Atwater road just south of Five Corners. I believe the father's name was Herbert (dec.). Hi, have you checked the "ebay postcard site". They have photos of towns from everywhere and there are many on just "Auburn, New York". Sue: It sounds like your family belongs to "the other" Ward family. I come across them occasionally in my research and even went to school with some back in the late 70's and early 80's in Moravia. I think this is part of a family that has been around since the early 1800's or before even. My family didn't arrive here until 1852- whether these others were cousins that were already here or what I have no idea. My lines pretty much stayed between Owasco and Cayuga Lakes, ie. Scipio, Ledyard, Fleming area. I know one branch moved into Niles at sometime because there is an old family farm on Rockefeller Rd. Another part of this line moved to Niles in the years just before 1919: William and Frances (Ingalls) Ward. They had two sons, Allen and Burton and in 1919, their third and final son, Gordon was born in a house on Duryea St, just north of the Moravia/Niles town line. In 1923, they moved onto Rockefeller Rd in Moravia. These are my lines-- Gordon was my father. My Aunt Susie Ward Marin's father was Welby Dunbar Ward (b. 1862 in Sempronius). Welby's parents were Robert T. Ward (1820 - 1887) and Catherine Snyder(1829-1909). They had 5 Ward children. Sue Wallker swalker6076@altavista.com
Nancy have you run into a George Ward Reynolds or Robert W. Reynolds (brothers) -I think their mother may have been a Ward. George was born around 1833 -unknown when Robert born. Thanks. Sharon Warner Wickham vawick@aol.com
Could he have been sent to Auburn prison instead? The max in a NY jail now is a sentance of up to 1 year. Anything longer would be done at a prison. Not sure how the law was then. Sharon Genealogists never die they just lose their census.

I am searching for Maurice Griffin who immigrated from Ireland to Troop, Cayuga Co, NY and married Catherine Nugent. He was born 2/2/1860 in Wexford Ireland and died 3/30/1941 Throop, Cayuga Co, NY. His parents were Thomas Griffin and Mary Burke. As far as I know they never came to the US. Family stories said he had a brother John. Catherine Nugent was borned 5/04/1859 in Waterford Ireland and died 4/14/1938 Throop, Cayuga Co, NY. Her parents were William Nugent d 4/10/1883 Throop, Cayuga Co, NY and Catherine Bragian D 4/30/1901 Throop, Cayuga Co, NY. Catherine Bragian parents were Morris and Johanna Bragian. Though her parents never came to the US. William and Catherine Nugent had several children. Any connections with anybody? Rick Bova rbova@4dcomm.com
Does anyone have a suggestion on how I might find out if/when a William Gowers was released from the prison. From the Cayuga County surrogate records, I found that William was taken from his home in Berlin and sent to the Cayuga county jail in Nov of 1882 (age 62). He remained there until at least May of 1883 when a petition was submitted requesting his release. I can find nothing stating if he actually was released or anything about him after this date. I have already checked with the Records Retention dept and the Cayuga Co Sherriff's Dept. Thank you Donna
I'm researching these families and collateral names in southern Cayuga County. CHASE, TOBIAS in Union Springs, Town of Springport area. Farmers during early part of 1800's. TITUS in same area. Arrived in early/mid 1800's from Dutchess County and Long Island. Belonged to Quaker faith at least early on. WARD family arrived in 1852 from England (William and Mary Ann) and originally settled in Ledyard. I've got something on at least some of the descendants of each of their children. Farmers early on, later some worked in factories, but many still farmers. Descendants owned/operated the following businesses in/around Auburn in this century: George H Ward & Son (car dealer), Ward Trucking, Ward Wreckers, A D Ward & Son (fuel delivery) and to the present day Ward Oil Co. INGALLS arrived in Fleming around 1900-1910 from Antwerp in Jefferson County. I don't have a lot on the present day members of these families, except for the WARD line. I list the various enterprises in case some of the cousins are just starting out and don't know the line on back. I'd love to hear from any and all cousins!
