He is first found in 1850 census living with his wife Charolette (Garthwait, daughter of Daniel Garthwait) and 3 children. He moved to WI shortly after that. I have tried in vain to identify his parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Terry Reisinger Terry Reisinger

    2. So many of you have traversed Cayuga County and are familiar with the area! Tell me, how would you guess a girl, Clarissa Melissa Binnings, who was 8 years old and lived with her family in Scipio in 1850, would have met a young man named William Robinson who lived in Ashtabula Co, Ohio and run off to Pennsylvania to marry him (because she was underage, only 14). Her father worked on the Erie Canal, family tradition says as a steamboat captain, but that, I'm told, is impossible. All guesses welcome. Thank you! Marilyn Carlson

Marie -----Original Message----- From: Bill Hecht [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, March 03, 2005 8:38 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [NYCAYUGA] Another Question Maybe I should also ask the question: How many out there DO NOT travel to Cayuga County, the County Offices, or to Museums here because "everything" is on the web? and while I am asking How many would rather see images on the web in enlarged formats rather than small, one size images in a book ? I contend that there is a place for both and that there is no way the pictures will ever be published in a paper format so that people can see the enlarged images. Who is ever going to publish a 40-50 inch print of a picture ? The only way to see these "pictures-in-pictures", that huge web enlargement provide, is on the web. Thus; to not publish on the web is to keep from the public their heritage. The best way to see the detail in old maps and images is on the web through enlargements. Pictures and maps we have looked at for years reveal new information when enlarged. ==== NYCAYUGA Mailing List ==== Have you visited the NYGenWeb project home page lately? http://www.rootsweb.com/~nygenweb ============================== Jumpstart your genealogy with OneWorldTree. 1. Cayuga Co. research from CA
    2. Marilyn LeVeque
    3. Hello all, Well, I would be interested in any history research groups in Cayuga Co., NY, but I live in CA. I must say the Cayuga Co., NYGENWEB site provided confirmation of much of my family's oral history & written, although my Dad's oral history was more accurate than our little booklet "US BROWNS", written in 1931. I have browsed many state & county sites & the only ones that comes close to Cayuga County's site are the site of Jan Raub Reuther who has much of Warren County, NJ history & Steuben County, IN site & the posting in MI of the 1870 MI Census online by the Library of MI & indexed FREE. The Cayuga County NYGENWEB site is incredible & has amazed me with its rich posting of history. It is nice to see the "Biographical Review of Leading Citizens" scanned pages & the Directory of 1867 where I found Harmon G. Brown listed & Horace John Christian. The cemetery listings are great, also. I would like to know if there are listings of any orphanages in Cayuga County, NY ca 1847-1860 & the children. My Carrie M. Wallin was orphaned after her birth in 1847, her older brother, John T. Wallin went into the Army in 1858 & her older sister, Mary Ann Wallin/g married Horace John Christian in 1858. John Walling's grandson wrote a book telling that his grandfather & his brothers were "farmed out" to a family & they tended horses that were used in the construction of the Erie Canal. Their parents Joseph & Susannah (Cook) Wallin/g came to America ca 1840-1845, but aside from that & the little history Carrie wrote we know nothing more. I have Carrie Wallin Brown's CW Widow's pension papers & she was raised by the Benjamin & Susan VanOstrand family of NY & then Calhoun County, MI. She returned to Cayuga County in 1863 & is listed in the 1870 Census in Mentz with Horace & Mary Ann Christian. Horace & Mary Ann Christian & Carrie M. Walling moved to Calhoun Co., M! I after the 1870 Census & Horace John Christian died in 1878 from a horse kick to the head. I know all the history posted on the Cayuga site took much time & I am grateful, especially since I may never make it back to see where my ancestors settled in the early 1800's. The Historian's office seems very helpful & I spoke to them this past week. Thank you Bill Hecht for the aerial views of Cayuga County, NY. Sincerely, Marilyn (Brown) LeVeque in CA

The town office said "Oh go on and stop by - she wont mind" - she didn't and I found a lead. Mr. Sweeting was very ill even then. 1. Research Trips to Cayuga County, NY
    2. Hi Bill and all, Regarding a research week in Cayuga County, I'll be travelling to the area in time for a July 9th & 10th family reunion in Sterling Valley and Oswego. I'll probably be staying in an inexpensive motel in the Oswego area but I'm open to suggestion. My travel time is still flexible and I'd love to meet anyone travelling "up there" at the same time. By the way, the Town of Sterling Historian is my cousin, a few times removed, Hallie Arden DeMass Sweeting. She is a delightful lady and, sadly, she recently lost her husband of many years, Donald Sweeting. Hallie and I descend from one of the founders of Sterling Valley--Pierre Dumas and his wife, Mary Huntley Dumas (the name has been "anglicized" to Demas/Demass/DeMass). The family reunion that I will be attending is not Hallie's line; it is the descendants of John (Jack) and Lizzie Mae Stock Demass, my great-grandparents, who lived almost all of their married life in the area photographed by Bill this past Sunday! I'm not sure if anyone is interested in all or any of that information, but there it is, in case you are! Warm regards from Austin, TX, Marilyn Stern n a message dated 3/4/2005 10:02:55 AM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Someone suggested a week where one could travel to Cayuga County and do research. Now this sounds like a great idea ! What would all of you out there want and expect when you got here? 1-Could a bunch of rooms be booked at a local motel bee reserved so you could get good rates? 2-Coupons for discount meals at certain restaurants? 3-Extended hours at the historical societies, museums and historians office? 4-Would you want County Records open on the weekend (unlikely) or could you do your research during their normal hours? 5-Cemetery tours? 6- Would you want extended hours at town and village offices? bill hecht

    3. I believe that the information on the web is only a tiny fraction of that available. The LDS main Family History Library in Salt Lake has incredible amounts of material not on any web site. 3 million rolls of microfilm plus hundreds of thousands of volumes of printed books. Each county I visit has treasure troves of local materials. There're hundreds of Nations with records that are not digitized. Think of the newspaper materials that are lodged in local county archives. The thousands of untranscribed & unphotographed graveyards, bibles, church records, court records... I wish it was all online, but I doubt it will ever be. Travel will never be unnecessary. 1. FAMILY HISTORY TRAVEL TO CAYUGA COUNTY AND CENTRAL NY
    2. In reply to mail posted from Bill Hecht regarding the subject: From reading different mailing list I am on, I discovered the Auburn NY web site. It started me on opening many doors regarding relatives, even though the information on the official Auburn site is very scant. Both Grandparents and parents are deceased & with them went any family history that we never thought to inquire about, other than a few names. From the VERY LITTLE that was posted on the official site it got me to search further. Thanks to the work of a very dedicated genealogist from the Auburn area and the site supported by them, I was able to find more. This past summer my husband & I took 2 day weekend trip to Auburn, NY (from Kingston, NY). Thanks to a very kind person in Auburn we were able to find lodging that was pet friendly (our lab dog goes everywhere with us). The money spent by us was a room (extra payment for the pet) for two nights, + 6 meals, and gasoline for the car. From the information gotten from the dedicated genealogist site we went to visit the graves of relatives (Heiser). We even found a few other (Shapley). Another genealogist from the Great Lakes area requested, if we had the time, to take some photos of family that she had at one of the Cemeteries we visited - which we did. Needless to say she was very happy with the results & we were also with our results and glad we helped out another researcher. I fell in love with Auburn, it was such a great little city with so much history. Because of this, I volunteered to transcribe the Census from the Auburn, NY area (now working on the 1880 year). I started to do this because there was so LITTLE information on the official Auburn web site. I am hoping that by doing the transcribing I may help others out that otherwise would not be able to get information. Because Bernie was aware of my transcribing, he made sure I was forwarded a directory that he has transcribed/scanned which has helped me tons. My volunteer work is done between taking care of my family and working full time, but one that I very much enjoy doing and require no thank you for, my thanks comes from the happy glee when another genealogist finds a hit. Prior to our trip to Auburn, NY I was horrified to find out that most of the Cemetery records for the Soule Cemetery are in the Town Garage in a pile !!!! I find this to be awful (at this time that is the only word to describe how I felt about historical and the deceased records), also the few times I did contact officials in Auburn, I did get results, but a few times was questioned via phone call as to why I needed it - which NO other area ever did. I just can't understand how a city and/or county with so much history can be so lacks with posting information on their web site about information they have, even if there is follow-up to do (such as ordering a document, if possible visiting, etc.). I am sure others doing research are grateful to find any information that they may follow up on, but this area is so cloistered about this information (other than the few genealogist) - it is shameful. Even Ulster County, where I live, makes the public more informed about historical records they have. The state of Michigan is also so opened about posting information that is available (with follow up that can be done) and it is done is a great format which is easy to follow through on. Auburn, NY and Cayuga County should follow this example. It would also put the minds of some of the great civil servants to good use and maybe make their positions more of a challenge and interesting. When I retire next year, I am going to make another trip to Auburn, NY for only a week, since they are unfriendly to genealogy research, and this is the only way I can acquire information (since it is not posted as to where, how, etc.). But, since Michigan has such a great web site, we will be making our trip there much longer and the results will be so much more information acquired since we know the where, how, etc. to find it. Of course, the towns in Michigan will get more income from us since we are staying longer than will Auburn, NY. I am sorry if I rambled on with no method to my madness, but I do wish Cayuga County and especially Auburn, NY would get with the program - it is a shame to waste so much history.....................................and there would be much more income if they would make the information known that they do have and be friendly about it. Thanks for hearing me out. Jan Scholar of Godfrey Memorial Library Volunteer for: Italian Genealogical Group and USGenWeb Census Project

    3. The idea for the History Week in Cayuga County was suggested to me by a member of this listserve; it was not my idea but I think it is a GREAT idea ! And very worthy of further consideration. Secondly I do not have a specific website. The main Cayuga County website has been lovingly, and for many years maintained, by Bernie and Susan Corcoran.
