    3. Based on the 1860 census and the 1859 map, its clear that Joseph Gamel Jr. lived on what is now Goose Street between Sharpsteen and East Genoa Roads (about a mile west of Grisamore's produce farm). Joseph Gamel Sr. should be on the 1853 map but isn't. The 1850 census indicates he was either at the same place as Joseph Jr. or possible a bit further North on what is now Stewarts Corners Road where all of the Pierson's were located. I grew up about a mile to the east (much later) and I am confident in saying that the landscape along those roads hasn't changed much since the land was cleared in the early 1800's. If anything there are much fewer houses today than there were in the mid-1800's. From my recollection the location of Joseph Jr's house is a farm field today. Bill has a several pictures of Genoa Village on his website (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~springport/pictures.html). One of my favorites is the following taken from the west looking towards Genoa hamlet http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Espringport/pictures_17/00001791.jpg The area where Joseph Jr. lived would be approximately at the top of the far hill just above where the church steeple is pointing. This picture was probably taken about 1900. Except that Rt 90 is now paved, the other differences between then and now are very subtle. As to the question of whether you can learn everything you need to know from the internet, unless you actually visit Genoa, you probably won't pronounce the name as the locals do (hint it's not the same as they would pronounce it in Italy). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Leona Gilpatrick" <[email protected]> To: < > Sent: Monday, March 07, 2005 11:57 PM Subject: [NYCAYUGA] History Research Week (surnames in Genoa, Cayuga County - GAMEL and TALMADGE - 1840-1855?) > Hi All, I have been watching the postings and find the information very > interesting. 1. History Research Week (surnames in Genoa, Cayuga County - GAMEL and TALMADGE - 1840-1855?)
    2. Leona Gilpatrick
    3. Hi All, I have been watching the postings and find the information very interesting. I have never been to New York, but it is one of my fondest dreams to go to all of my ancestrial States and research the info first hand and see where they lived. But I won't be able to for now and not in the forseeable future, how I would love to be able to attend a history research week it is a wonderful idea. Several years ago I was able to go to Nebraska (where I was born) for a family reunion and naturally had to travel almost the whole State in 4 days and see where my g-grandfather lived (Bloomfield), what a beautiful little town The trip to Nebraska was worth every cent just to be able to see the cemetery, visit with people in the retirement home who were children when my great grandfather lived, they actually knew him. I also went to the library and found him in their centennial book they had prepared, if I had not gone to the town I wouldn't have known this information even existed, plus I was able to buy the last two copies of this book at a very discounted rate from the library. There is no telling what bit of information is waiting for me on New York, considering what I was able to find from my last trip!! I live in California so it took over two days to get there by car. Bill I want to tell you how deeply I appreciate all the pictures you have been posting. What a very kind soul you are. Just by chance would you happen to have any pictures of Genoa? My ancestor Joseph W. Gamel lived there from after 1833 to before 1860. He was there with his second wife (Sarah maybe Talmadge?) in the 1840 and 1850 census. Prior to 1840 he was in Washington County, Argyle Township with his first wife (Isabel Gillis) who died in 1833. Does anybody know anything about Genoa and what type of records are available? I Would like to get a marriage license for Joseph and Sarah (married after 1833 probably before 1838) if it exists and perhaps to see if Sarah died there, according to the family bible Sarah died on 11 Sep 1858 but not where? Joseph was living in Illinois with his son in 1860 he died there in 1863 and is buried there. Joseph and Sarah had 2 children Sabra E. (B: 04 Oct 1838) and Ellen Charlotte (B: 23 Dec 1851) but no death dates. Sabra and Ellen were probably born in Genoa. I have it in my records that Sabra married a Joel Pierson on June 14, 1858. I hope I have made this information understandable, it has been a looong day :) Leona [email protected]

This peeked my interest as my g.grandmother's death certificate states that she is buried there, Hazel Whitfield Farmer, died Jan. 13, 1926, burial date Jan. 16, 1926. But when I contacted the cemetery, they claimed they have no record of her being buried there. This has been extremely frustrating to me. Perhaps her burial record is lying in the pile on the floor?" ANSWER: Wendy, I know the frustration you are going through. I went through it a number of times regarding Auburn, NY + genealogy. I cannot remember who wrote me about the records for the Soule Cemetery being in a pile in the Town Garage, but it was someone from Auburn & I took them at their word. You are very lucky to have spoken with someone from the Soule Cemetery. I contacted the Town Supervisor a number of times and received NO REPLY, and it is my understanding that the Town Supervisor + company take care of all whatever at Soule Cemetery. My only suggestion would be to contact Bernie Corcoran, Cayuga County Coordinator for NYGenWeb Project in Auburn ([email protected]) - I am sure he cannot do lookups for you, but can give you guidance as to what to do. When you contact him be sure to provide ALL information regarding your search & the problems you ran into. You may also want to do more research regarding your G Grandmother & where she did die. Good luck with your endeavors & if I can be of any further help, please contact me & will see what I can do. 3. Roger, Thanks for the school handbook. You wondered if the pupils included were only those who lived in the village. My grandmother, Alice E. Brockway (Class of 1887), lived with her grandparents during the school year. Their house was on Skinner Hill Rd, just outside of the village limits. I don't know if that was close enough to be considered the village. The rest of the year she lived with her parents about three miles east of the village on Brockway Rd, where I live now. 1. Moravia Union School Handbook for 1894-95
    2. Roger Phillips
    3. Scanned and uploaded, it lists the names of the current School Board, Staff, Teachers and Past Graduates from 1884 through 1894. Also lists all students for the 1893-1894 term. Includes Books, Curriculum and Regulations. I'm not sure whether the lower grades only include pupils in the village of Moravia or the whole township. Based on some of the names that I recognize, this appears to only be the village. http://www.nonesuchfolks.com/Moravia_School.htm Roger Phillips [email protected]

    3. There have been Van Buskirks in Summerhill since at least the late 1850's. I remember them 20 or 30 years ago, but don't know who's left. See 1860 Census for Town of Summerhill page 18. Cornelius (Male) age 31, b. NY Julia age 33, b. NY etc. If you look on the maps (http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycayuga/maps.htm) they are on Lot 28 in Summerhill. On the 1904 map they live on Van Buskirk road. Today I believe its called Dresser Road. There are also Van Buskirks listed in Genoa on various census from the 1860s through 1920 (at least). I looks like they came from PA so they might be a different line. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Teresa Davis" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 05, 2005 7:20 PM Subject: [NYCAYUGA] Van Buskirk > Hello, > > I am new to the list and helping a friend with > research in the Cayuga/Onondaga county area. 3. Hello, I am new to the list and helping a friend with research in the Cayuga/Onondaga county area. We are looking for the parents of Cornelia Van Buskirk who married Abram or Abraham Hoagland. The closest thing I have seen to a link is a state census record (1855)in Aurelius with David Van Buskirk as head of hoursehold and his wife Catherine, grown sons and daughters and a grandchild, William Hoagland, born in Onondaga who is the right age to be Abram and Cornelia's son William. If anyone has any info about the Van Buskirk family in Cayuga county, please let me know, thanks, Teresa Davis __________________________________ Celebrate Yahoo!'s 10th Birthday! Yahoo!
